54 <br />PLANNING COMMISSION RECOMMENDED APPROVAL G. E. SEXTON APPLICATION TO RESUBDIVIDE LOT 35, LEE TRACT (225 <br />Orchard Street) INTO TWO LOTS. Councilman Spillers moved approval of the Planning Commission's recommen— <br />dation, seconded by Councilman Jones and carried. <br />FURTHER CONSIDERATION E. V. HOPKINS APPLICATION FOR VARIANCE TO ALLOU 17' 611 DEPTH TO THREE GARAGES IN <br />TRIPLEX AT LOT 1, BLOCK 2, REESE TRACT ( Poplar & Ebener ). Councilman Spillers wanted to know if this <br />was for carports or garages. It was explained that they are garages, however, they do not have doors. <br />This was followed by discussion after which Councilman Royer moved approval of the Planning Commission's <br />recommendation and offered RESOLUTION 1967 FOR VARIANCE TO ALIm 17' 1611 DEPTH TO THREE GARAGES IN <br />TRIPLEX AT LOT 1, BLOCK 2, REESE TRACT and moved its adoption, seconded by Councilman Spillers and <br />carried on roll call. <br />TRAFFIC COMMITTEE RECOMMENDED TRAFFIC SIGNALS AT HUDSON STREET AND JEFFERSON AVENUE. This signal is to be <br />actuated by traffic treadles installed on Hudson Street each side of Jefferson Avenue. This signal will <br />allow free flow of traffic on Jefferson Avenue except when traffic on Hudson Street operates the treadles. <br />The material and equipment necessary for this installation is estimated at $2,500. The labor for this <br />installation can be supplied by the Electrical and street maintenance Departments without requiring <br />additional personnel, <br />Councilman Spillers moved approval of the Traffic Committee's recommendation, seconded by Councilman <br />Stout. This was followed by discussion in regard to overhead signals and the possible difference of <br />installation charges. Chief Faulstich recommended that the Council hire an outside traffic consultant <br />to make a study and recommendation as to the type of signal to install. It was decided that this was not <br />necessary and did not warrant the additional expense involved. Motion carried on roll call with <br />Councilman Britschgi and Mayor Herkner voting NO. <br />Councilman Britschgi moved that overhead s gnals be considered at Alameda and Jefferson Avenue, seconded <br />by Councilman Royer and carried. <br />Councilman Granger wanted to know why the signal at Broadway was turned off at night. Chief Faulstich <br />explained that the State turned the signals off and explained their reason for doing same. <br />APPOINT flE10BER TO THE PERSONNEL BOARD. Councilman Jones submitted the name of Harold E. Kren who is the <br />Head of Ampex Office Services division and Assistant Manager of Personnel and Plant Services. Mr. Kren <br />holds the degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of California. <br />He has been a resident of Redwood City since 1950. Councilman Jones moved appointment of Harold E. Kren <br />to the Personnel Board, seconded by Councilman Stout and carried. <br />APPOINT RECREATION FOUNDATION COMMITTEE. Mayor Herkner appointed the following to the Committee: <br />Mrs. Louise Tornell and Mr. Irving Gold, Park & Recreation Commissioners, <br />C. B. Currie, City Attorney, Lyle R. Edson, Attorney, VT. J. Reyneck. <br />Wells Fargo Bank, Stanford Christian, American Trust Company, E. J. Hopkins, <br />Bank of America and Councilman Jones and Royer. <br />Mayor Herkner stated that the merchants had contacted him and were asking permission of the Council to hold <br />an opening celebration for the parking lot in the early spring, and they asked him to appoint a committee. <br />The Mayor appointed John Ryan, chairman, and the merchants to appoint their own committee. <br />Mayor Herkner reported that the Police Department wanted permission to change the decal on the police cars. <br />Chief Faulstich reported to the Council and showed them the proposed decals to be used. He also stated <br />that they wanted to change the color of the police cars to black and white, the doors to'be white. <br />Chief Faulstich stated that the cost of painting the car doors would be approximately $20.00 per each <br />car and he was of the opinion that his budget would stand the cost.
