371
with other sub—committees appointed by the Six Year Plan Committee.
Many items for consideration were raised and placed upon the table. Through general discussion and
then with unanimous agreement the vast list of items were reduced to five major projects. They were:
1. Library Facilities
2. Fire Stations
3. Corporation Yards:
a. Street Department
b. Water Department
c. Park Department
4- Convention Hall or Auditorium
5• City Ha -ll and Civic Center I
Study Groups were organized to delve into details on each of these projects and report back to the
r Sub --Committee.
The Sub—Committee conducted five formal meetings over a period of approximately two months. In the
intervening periods the study groups made their analysis and rendered progress reports to the Sub—
committee.
REC OMENDAT I ONS
The Sub—committee suggests that the following recommendations be accepted by the Six Year Plan Can
mittee for submission to the City Council.
1. That the present .corporation yard facilities for the Park Department, Water Department, and Street
Department, and the maintenance of other capital equipment of the City are wholly inadequate. Several
solutions were evident to the Sub—committee. However, the final determination as to the hest course of
action would require a detailed analysis of operational costs on the various alternatives, which must
necessarily be conducted by the department heads and the City Manager.
The Several courses of action considered by the Sub—committee were:
a. Construction of s separate Park Department corporation yard facilities on land to be acquired
from the Baird Lumber Company.
Land — 3 acres A$35,000 per acre $105,000.00
Structure 30,000.00
Total cost $135,000.00
Reconstruct -ion of present corporation yard
facility at Chhstnut & Bayshore Highway $ 70,000.00
b. Sale of present corporation yard at Chestnut & Bayshore Highway with purchase of new location
to house corporation yard facilities for all departments.
Land cost , 5 acres unknown
Structure $ 852000.00
Since the best location for a single facility to house all departments
is not known, the land value could not be established.
c. Three separate locations with
1. Park Department facility at Baird Lumber Company property.
2. Street Department in remodeled but present Chestnut & Bayshore Highway location,
3. Water Department at the reservoir site.
P
2. Total Library facilities are adequate for the ensuing 6 year period with short time overloading
6
during the hours of 7:00 to 10:00 P. M. The overloading is currently the result of inordinately heavy
use by children of the Redwood City Elementary School District and students of the Sequoia High School
District.
FM In order to refrain from building additional housing facilities, it is recommended that the proper
authorities consult with both the Redwood City Elementary School District and the Sequoia High School
District Board of Trustees toward the end that the school districts make their own library facilities
available to their own students during the evening study hours.
In order to gain efficiency of operation in the present main Library building, the installation of a
freight elevator of sufficient capacity to carry a library cart and one person is recommended..
Cost — $20,000.00
