280
Mayor Keckley at the Congressional -City Conference , March 4 -6 ,
1973 , Washington , D . G . , seconded by Councilman Norris and carried
on roll call vote , Councilmen Weymouth and Williams voting no , and
Councilman Rhodes being noted absent .
(MINUTE ORDER #73 -12 )
COMMUNICATIONS :
( a ) WRITTEN - Copies submitted to Council :
1 . City of Rohnert Park urging cities to unite to make
certain Public Employment Program ( EEA of 1971) is
not terminated .
2 . Contribution from Redwood City Bobbies in the amount
of $25 . 00 toward purchase of a Municipal Bus Bench
at Casa de Redwood .
Councilman Henderson felt it would be appropriate
to again express Council ' s appreciation to the
Redwood City Bobbies for their contribution , and
suggested that perhaps this could be done by
letter by the Mayor . (MEMO 1 -23 -73 )
( b ) ORAL :
1 . Mr . Alan Coppola , 1604 Roosevelt Avenue , spoke on
behalf of the Redwood City Striders , to which City
had paid $250 ( for specific track events in November
1971 and November 1972 ) , He stated that the club ' s
coach had just quit due to lack of sufficient funds ;
that they had 148 members and the club was disinte -
grating , unless they obtain more funds . His purpose
in appearing was to request doubling by the City of
allocation , to get the club back on its feet .
In response to questions concerning their budget , he
advised that funds are derived from $ 12 . 50 membership
fee and private donations , and named some of their
costs , such as insurance , uniforms , travel expenses
to track meets . Mayor Keckley asked for a more pre -
cise annual.. budget figure , and what was felt to be a
more desirable budget to attain their goal of atten-
ding meets and to maintain equipment , etc , Mr . Coppola.
responded that their total budge was $ 500 , but that it
should be $ 1500 .
Mayor Keckley asked whether Parks and Recreation Department could
absorb the Striders into their recreational program , and the Director
of Parks and Recreation indicated that whether the City could
subsidize this group would have to be determined on the basis
of whether the budget could handle it , and also whether it
would be appropriate to do so .
Following additional discussion , Councilman Weymouth moved to refer
the request to Staff for review and recommendation to Council at
the next regular meeting (February 5 , 1973 ) , seconded by Council-
man Henderson and carried .
(MINUTE ORDER #73 - 13 )
1/22 /73
