F. Mayor Buchan advised that she had attended the very inspiring installation service of Reverend Ron Williams of First Baptist Church on July 18th and described how committed the congregation is to live by their motto "Where you are never a stranger." -_. G. Mayor Buchan encouraged everyone to read Rob Morse's great column on Redwood City and its recent awards. The column appeared in the July 18th Sunday edition of the San Francisco Examiner. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. STAFF REPORTS A. Consideration of request for a Mid Summer Carnival Permit (101-02) REPORT: Assistant to the City Manager, July 13, 1993 Assistant to the City Manager Centeno presented the staff report: The Downtown Association requested the use of the Main Street and Middlefield Parking lot for a mid-summer Carnival fund raiser and as a means of drawing people into the downtown area. Ms. Centeno explained the impacts on parking during a week long carnival as compared to one held on a weekend or a holiday. Geri Mayers, Broadway merchant, member of the Kiwanis who sponsor the very successful 4th of July Carnival, asked Council to impose the same stringent requirements on any other applicant that are imposed and followed by the Kiwanis. Jim Honjas, Broadway merchant, member of the Downtown Association, advised Council that the Downtown Association wished to withdraw its request at this --- time. MAYOR BUCHAN ANNOUNCED FOR THE RECORD, THAT DUE TO THE WITHDRAWAL OF THE REQUEST THE COUNCIL WOULD TAKE NO ACTION ON THIS ISSUE AT THIS TIME. Consideration of request from the Downtown Association for a permit to hold Downtown Market Days (101-12) REPORT: Assistant to the City Manager, July 12, 1993 I Assistant to the City Manager Centeno presented the staff report advising that the Downtown Association had requested to hold weekly promotional events called "Downtown Market Days" every Wednesday on the corner of Broadway and Main, the sidewalks along Main Street and a portion of the parking lot behind the Cliff Hotel. The City Attorney had reported it would not be proper to process the request under the Broadway Mall Ordinance because those regulations only allow for relatively short-term activities of a non-recurring nature. Ms. Centeno advised that these outside vendors would not be required to pay license fees as the downtown merchants do. Ms. ,_..
