372
Councilman Rhodes moved to adopt RESOLUTION NO . 666o APPROVING SPECIFICATIONS
AND BID DOCUMENTS FOR SEVEN TRANSIT BUSES ; AND AUTHORIZING AND DIRECTING
THE CITY CLERK TO CALL FOR BIDS THEREFOR , seconded by Councilman Williams .
Councilman Rhodes , Chairman of the Transportation Committee , indicated
that the Committee felt the system was fulfilling a needed service in
the community , and upon finding that maintenance costs were becoming
excessive for the present buses , unanimously voted to recommend to
Council to call for bids on a new fleet of either six or seven buses ,
depending upon what could be realized from trade -in . In discussion by
Council , it was determined that the new specifications call for 25-
passenger vehicles , rather than 17 , and for improved braking system
and tires . Anticipated delivery was 120 days . It was suggested by
Council that a depreciation schedule should be set up in the future , so
that replacement of the buses would not occur all at one time . City
Manager noted that adoption of S . B . 325 would provide for allocation
of a portion of Gas Tax funds to local transportation , although at this
time it was not known how much Redwood City would be eligible to receive .
After brief further discussion , motion carried on roll call vote ,
Councilman Keckley being noted absent .
Elimination of Left Turn Traffic Movement , El Camino Real and Chestnut Street ,
and Installation of Divider Strip .
Recommendation to eliminate left turns from El Camino Real into Chestnut
Street was recommended by the Traffic Committee , and concurred in by
Acting Deputy Director of Public Works - Engineering Design, Chief of
Police and Ordinance Review Committee , as a means of reducing the number
of accidents at this intersection . Councilman Henderson questioned why
the project was not planned to be done to the design of the ultimate design
of proposed improvements of El Camino Real , and City Manager responded
that this project was very small in terms of area and with respect to
the ultimate improvement of El Camino Real , and that nothing in this
project would be contrary to or wasted by the ultimate improvements .
The cost was estimated to be under $2 , 000 , and involved simply a small
extension of an already existing median .
Mayor Bury expressed concern relative to the effect on businesses in the
area , and as to whether or not they had been contacted . Councilman
Petersen noted that he had mentioned the matter at a recent meeting , and
had asked that it be reviewed because of the number of accidents , many
1 -10 -72
