The recommendation to raise the monthly fee for parking permits from $4 . 00 to $7 . 00 was also discussed , as well as changing rate on long- term meters to 5$ an hour , rather than 5¢ for two hours . City Manager pro tem advised these were recommended because of obvious disparities between parking fees and cost of providing the service . He advised in response to question that San Mateo does not have a monthly parking permit . The recommendation to increase the monthly fee for parking permit is based on the fact that at present the charge is about equivalent to the amount that would be paid into the meters , but with a change -over to 5¢ an hour , there would be incentive to purchase the monthly permit , even at the increased rate . Cost of changing the meters it was felt would be somewhat less than the recent change in on-street meters , which cost approximately $ 1200 . Councilman Henderson moved to accept recommendations of Staff for alternative to contract with armored car service , and authorize action to implement the recommendations : ( 1 ) Authorize a new temporary position in the Police Department , Meter Enforcement Deputy II , who would collect all coins from all meters and either do , or oversee the sorting , counting , and packaging of coins and make the deposits at the bank ; (2 ) Based on three months ' experience , consolidate the two positions of Meter Enforcement Deputy II and Parking Meter Repairman into a single position either in the Police Department or the Treasurer ' s office ; ( 3 ) Change the rates on the long- term meters to 50 an hour , accepting nickels , dimes , and quarters only ; (4 ) Increase the Parking Permit Fee from the present $4 per month to $7 per month .
