241 Minutes of Adjourned Regular Meeting Redwood City Council August 11 , 1971 7 : 30 P . M . Veterans Memorial Building Mayor Bury called the meeting to order at 7 : 35 P . M . , and on ROLL CALL the following were noted present : Councilmen Mary W . Henderson , Paul C . Keckley , William C . Rhodes , Ray A . Weymouth , Mayor Robert H . Bury , and City Clerk Marian McCrindle . Councilmen Herbert G . Petersen and James S . Williams were noted absent . Also noted present were City Manager James M . Fales , Jr . , City Attorney David E, Schricker , Deputy Police Chief Joel Mansfield , Fire Chief John Keller , Planning Director Ken Schroeter , Chief Building Official Charles Gyselbrecht , Deputy Director of Public Works Glenn M. Jain, Traffic Engineer Arthur U . Eskelin , Engineering Administrative Assistant Arthur Balsamo , Civil Engineer Fred Sennewald , and Deputy City Clerk Frances I . Reggetts . Mayor Bury welcomed the large audience and indicated the meeting concerned preliminary studies for improvements on Alameda de las Pulgas , and that while the meeting was not a formal hearing, nor required , it was important and meaningful for Council to receive input from the community . He then noted that for the past several months , since the former City Manager resigned to accept a position with the State , City had been fortunate in having two men who very capably served in the capacity of temporary City Manager . He asked Vice -Mayor Keckley to join him in making presentation of RESOLUTION NO . 6576 COMMENDING WARKENTIN SCHROETER AND EXPRESSING APPRECIATION FOR HIS SERVICES AS CITY MANAGER PRO TEMPORE, and RESOLUTION NO * 6577 COMMENDING CHARLES GYSELBRECHT AND EXPRESSING APPRECIATION FOR HIS SERVICES AS CITY MANAGER PRO TEMPORE, signed by each member of the Council . Mayor Bury then introduced the new City Manager , James M . Pales , Jr . , who , in turn, introduced staff members who would discuss the proposed plans for improving Alameda de las Pulgas . Also present to respond to any questions was Mr . Larry Leonhardt , from the County Engineer ' s office . Planning Director indicated he would comment briefly on location , function and related uses . By reference to a map , he indicated the limits of the street , extending from Hillsborough to Menlo Park , and ties in to cities as far as Saratoga . This was considered one of the four main North-South routes through the City , the other three being Bayshore Freeway, Junipero Serra Freeway, and El Camino Real . Of these , Alameda carried less of the through traffic , and served more as a collector street for the residential areas . He described the residential character of the street , with careful attention to retaining street trees and other amenities worth preserving , and these were reasons that the proposal must be treated sensitively . The presentation was hopefully to give assurance of the kinds of attention given for the ultimate development .
