74
Mr . West indicated he was not able to give
a date , noting downturn in business that has
been experienced , and that capital expenditures
would be partially restricted . He added ,
however , headquarters would be built , and
Ampex intended to remain in Redwood City .
Responding to question from Council , he ad-
vised that the area of abandonment would not
be built upon, and would remain a non- structured
mall . He also assured Council that roadways
within the complex would be on Ampex property ,
and their responsibility to maintain .
Mayor Bury expressed concern as to access for pedestrian or bicycle traffic
through the property, and Mr . West responded that unfortunately , there would
be no provision for pedestrian traffic , citing recent increasing vandalism ,
He noted that originally , they did not have the concern for security that
was now necessary .
Police Chief advised that during the five days survey was conducted at
Broadway and 2nd Avenue , they were unable to identify any pedestrian flow
through the area , and that any pdestrian traffic was either going to or from
the Ampex buildings .
There was additional discussion with regard to diverted traffic , and Police
Chief felt with proper signing and educating the driving public , there should
be no problems , and indicated proposals would be made to Council at a later
time , if the bandonment was approved .
City Manager also noted that the agreement with Ampex provides for a lease-
back until such time as Rolison Road is constructed and open to the public ,
which would take until well into next year , thus giving ample time to educate
the public and devise necessary signing .
There being no communications or further discussion , Councilman Weymouth moved
to close the public hearing , seconded by Councilman Keckley and carried .
Councilman Keckley moved to adopt RESOLUTION NO , 6470 ABANDONING PORTIONS OF
BROADWAY AND DOUGLAS AVENUE IN THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY IN ACCORDANCE WITH
PART 3 OF DIVISION 9, STREETS AND HIGHWAYS CODE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA,
seconded by Councilman Weymouth , and carried on roll call vote .
City Manager asked that Chief McDonald be excused from the meeting, in order
for him to attend a meeting in San Mateo for presentation of Annual Award
for Policeman of the Year . Recipient this year was to be Officer James
Granucci .
Mayor Bury ordered a five -minute recess at 8 :45 P . M .
