220
had repeatedly brought recognition in the past to the City with its outstanding
Soccer, that the sport was a tough one requiring the best, and that the game
is rapidly gaining in popularity. The Team was scheduled shortly to
compete in two tournaments, one in British Columbia and the other in
Los Angeles.
The
Mayor
then presented to
Mr.
Sundquist a
Proclamation,
setting aside
the
week
of June 7 through
June
13 as Youth
Soccer Week,
and urging citizens of Redwood City to support the participants in the
West Coast Soccer Championship Games, and support for and attendance
at exhibition soccer match on June 13 at Sequoia High School.
Mayor Bury presented Certificate of Distinguished Service to James Coffis,
retiring member of Park and Recreation Commission, with expressions of
appreciation in recognition of his contributions to the Commission.
Loyalty Oath was then administered by the City Clerk to newly appointed
Parlc and Recreation Commissioners James Knecht (reappointed) and Frank
Guida, and to Mynin Wong, reappointed to Board of Building Review, who
were then presented by Mayor Bury with Certificates of Appointment.
(Gordon Hanson, reappointed as a, member of Board of Building Review was
unable to be present.)
Councilman Arnett referred to the forthcoming soccer tournament in British
Columbia, and moved to request that Staff investigate the feasibility
of financial participation by the City, seconded by Councilman
Henderson. City Manager noted previous similar situations in which
the City had contributed, such as for the World Women's Softball
Championship, that such contribution would be appropriate if that was
Council's desire, and that provision is made in the budget in the
Community Promotion Fund. There was discussion concerning question
of an appropriate amount, and Councilman Weymouth, after determining
the date of anticipated trip was June 26, recommended the item be
continued for one week (June 8, 1970).
Council commented on expected cost to travel for the team, and noted
fund-raising efforts are being conducted. Mayor Bury stated the matter
would be on the June 8 agenda for report from Staff, and for action.
(Memo 6-2-70) It was also his feeling that any action the Council
might take should be recognized as supplementary to, and not primary
basis for, the fund-raising campaign.
