265
City Attorney recommended the proponent be advised of deferment until the next
meeting. Councilman Petersen felt that he had not heard sufficient evidence
to justify continuing the matter. City Attorney also pointed out that the
public hearing had been closed and
the ordinance
introduced, and
to
hear
additional statements would require
reopening the
public hearing
and
republish-
ing notice. Motion LOST on roll call vote, Councilmen Henderson and Rhodes
voting yes; Councilmen Petersen, Weymouth and Mayor Bury voting no.
WHIPPLE AVENUE -EL CAMINO TRAFFIC PLAN. Ordinance pertaining to proposed parking
restrictions had been introduced at Council meeting of
May 25,
1970 and was
published.
Consideration of adoption had been delayed
to this
date to renotify
and permit
adjacent property owners opportunity to be
heard.
Communication from
Nick A. Korn, owner of Whipple Avenue Lodge, was read, indicating support and
approval of the proposed improvements as being a practical necessity. Councilman
Weymouth indicated he had been contacted by Mrs. Leo Eads, 50 Elwood Street, who
had previously written, approving of the improvements in general, but asked
reconsideration of parking restrictions, and that she was now withdrawing her
objections.
Mr. Alfred M, Kimmel, 3000 Brittan Avenue., San Carlos,
owner of Kimmel's Furniture, 928 Whipple Avenue, Redwood
City, requested certain parking modifications adjacent
to his store on Whipple Avenue, where all loading and
unloading is done. He stated it would be impossible
otherwise to conduct his business. He asked consideration
of imposing parking prohibition only during morning and
evening peak traffic hours. He suggested also making
Stafford Street one-way northbound, to relieve congestion
at that corner.
Police Chief was asked to respond, and he advised the plan had been designed on
basis of the traffic flow situation over a 24-hour period, and to adapt these
modifications would require redesign all the way through if the traffic pattern
is changed, This stretch of road is a major artery and carries heavy traffic,
and the design submitted was felt to be the best, based on their studies.
Mrs.
Anna Wessa,
1942
Whipple Avenue,
referred
to property
at
818 Whipple,
which
she stated had
a driveway
too short
to accomodate a car, and there is nowhere else to park
except on Whipple.
William Royer, 1047 Whipple, objected to having no parking
in front of his business, and felt City has reasonable
alternatives.
