336
Assistant City Manager reviewed several projects in progress: Charley Brown
Restaurant is scheduled for completion about October lst, and construction
is proceeding exceptionally well. Some things remain to be done at Staff level,
such as preparing plans and specifications for moving Harbor Master's quarters.
This is to be discussed with Marina Committee and it was hoped that meeting
would be set in the near future, Councilman Weymouth inquired as to plans
for landscaping the area, and Assistant City Manager responded that major
portion of the landscaping will be to replace that removed for the
restaurant, and some of which would be done by the City, and part by the
restaurant. Harbor Boulevard improvements, involved installation of 6" sewer
line. Grading has been completed, and remaining work consists of base
construction of curbs and gutters, and paving. It was estimated the project
would be completed within the 45 remaining days scheduled, and hopefully by
mid-September. He referred to Minutes of Port Commission of July 27th, concern-
ing decision to participate in the cost of this project. Pacific Telephone &
Telegraph Expansion Program, involving two locations Jefferson and El Camino,
and at 5th Ave, and Spring Street, was described. At Spring Street, a 4th floor
is being added to existing towers, and an administration building will be
constructed adjacent to the tower, with cost estimated to be approximately
$600,000. The expansion at Jefferson and El Camino is estimated at $325,000.
In discussion with representatives of PT&T, it was found the reason for these
programs is simply growth and demand for space. He was informed that State-
wide, in order to develop the facilities, they anticipate expenditures of
seven hundred million dollars. Their long-range plans at Spring Street call
for switching facility, and hope to submit plans at the first of the year.
This would mean a new 3 -story building and plans to expand to eight stories.
He noted PT&T was making a significant investment in the City, Woodside Road
Undergrounding is completed, with the total project approximately 53% complete.
Scheduled date of completion is about mid-March of 1971, although there were
indications from the State's Resident Engineer that it may be completed as early
as September or October of this year, Municipal Services Center is progressing
well, and all of the personnel who will work out of that facility are now there.
The third phase involves demolition of the old hangar building, most of which
has been accomplished and cleanup is in progress, Project is about completed,
and it is hoped to schedule dedication about the middle of September. An
additional item, not listed on the Manager's Report, concerned Signalization
at Jefferson and E1 Camino, which has been subject of a number of comments
recently, and it has been indicated the controller is scheduled to be in on Tuesday.
The long delay was occasioned by the State's desire to inspect the mechanism,
which has been accomplished, and the controller was expected to be back and
installed by August 4.
