431
Request of City of Belmont for change of street name , Shoreway Road , Redwood Shores .
Mayor Bury noted his prior report to Council on this request from the Mayor of the
City of Belmont , and that only a matter of approximately fifty feet is within Red -
wood City Limits . He has been informed that the businesses in the area are agree -
able to the change to Marriott Road , andprinting of any needed change in letterheads
_ of businesses affected by the street name change would be underwritten by Marriott .
He recommended that Council approve the change .
Councilman Keckley moved to adopt RESOLUTION NO . 6075 CHANGING NAME OF THAT PORTION OF
SHOREWAY ROAD LYING WITHIN THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY TO MARRIOTT ROAD , seconded by
Councilman Henderson .
Question was raised as to whether the motion should not be contingent upon approval
of the name change by the City Council of Belmont . Mayor Bury advised that Council
action would be to support the action of Belmont , if they approve the change at their
meeting . City Attorney stated that he would amend the Resolution to include the con-
dition of approval by City of Belmont , Motion approving amended resolution carried
on roll call vote , Councilman Petersen being noted absent .
Discussion of Government Affairs Program .
Councilman Keckley reported on proposal for student participation in the City ' s
government functions . He emphasized that he felt this program should be considered
a proposal by the Council as a whole . He indicated his hope that a program of this
type would aid in bridging the gap between the student community and municipal ad-
ministration, and believes benefits would be mutual through exchange of knowledge .
Initially , this plan would affect the Council , Planning Commission , Park and Recrea -
tion Commission and Port Commission . This would enable 24 students to participate ,
but he believes that as time went on , the program could be expanded to permit a
larger number of participants .
It is the intention to use a broad cross -section of the total student body . He felt
it would be advisable not to attempt to encompass too large a group , in the beginning,
and the group from Sequoia High School and City Staff concurred . Interns would be
drawn first from Sequoia High School , and as the program developed , others could be
included .
Councilman Keckley referred to his report of August 11 to the Council outlining the
proposal . (For full report , see City Clerk ' s File - Student Government Program . )
In reviewing his report , he noted that it is important for students to learn the chain
of command in city government . A change had been suggested to him that determination
as to amount of participation by the student should be made by the Mayor and Commis -
sion Chairmen . He added that he had asked Mr . Robert Biggs , Principal of Sequoia High
School , to be present at this meeting .
In the discussion which followed , Council expressed belief that the program could be
a valuable asset to the City , one of the benefits being that young people trained in
government procedures will later provide a source of qualified community leadership .
It was suggested that interns might be chosen by the election process , to serve for
two years , thus permitting sufficient time to develop programs and ideas for improved
understanding . However , others expressed the opinion that more students can be in-
cluded if the period served is on the semester basis , and this would also permit a
4,'0 I s "69
