He thanked the Council <br /> for expressing its sense of urgency and suggests that such means as are currently <br /> available through the engineering fraternity to determine criteria for residential <br /> and personal safety be pursued in order that Redwood Shores can move ahead and be - <br /> come a credit to the community . <br /> Mr . Henry Bostwick , Jr . , Vice President and General Manager of San Mateo County <br /> Development Association , advised his organization is charged with the responsibility <br /> of providing the capital for investments coming into the community . He advised of <br /> his previous service on the San Francisco Bay Conservation Study Commission , through <br /> which he was acquainted with ecological and geological concern in the area . He <br /> discussed the economic aspects , noting that economic growth doesn ' t just happen but <br /> is the result of risk-taking by responsible people willing to invest money in a <br /> community , and felt current situation is one that can and should be speedily resolved . <br /> He noted also earlier reference to the impact on the building trade , and added that <br /> population can be expected to continue to grow , and must be planned for , in homes <br /> and in employment . Finally , he added , people at the local level should have something <br /> to say where they are directly concerned , and hoped the Congressman would take steps 7 <br /> to bring the controversy to a quick conclusion . <br /> Mr . Gordon Blackley, Executive Vice President of the Peninsula Building Industry <br /> Association , which represents more than 200 San Mateo County home and apartment <br /> builders , subcontractors , and suppliers , expressed concern regarding the economic <br /> impact imposed by closing down of activity in Redwood Shores . He noted that three <br /> major building firms had scheduled construction of 242 residential units between <br /> June and December of this year in Redwood Shores . Statistics received from two of <br /> these firms indicated they would have spent nearly $2 , 000 , 000 in payroll alone , most <br /> of which he assumed would have been spent locally . He stated that in addition to <br /> payroll losses , halting of Redwood Shores has had a tremendous negative effect on the <br /> area economy through the loss of purchase of construction materhls , construction fin - <br /> ancing , sales expenses , etc . He urged immediate action so that the project can go <br /> forward and the housing industry can go ahead and ease the housing market situation <br /> and resume pumping payroll money into the local economy . <br /> Mr . William Leonard , Executive Director of the California Builders Council , stated <br /> the present situation has great significance for his group , and noted that several <br /> prominent fault lines exist in the area , i . e . , the San Andreas , Hayward and Calaveras <br /> Faults , and further indicated thatno part of the Bay Area is immune from seismic <br /> problems . He stated that he felt , from the testimony at this meeting , that the City <br /> Council had gone to great efforts to determine the problems and attempt to solve <br /> them .
