City Manager stressed point indicated in his report to Council that additional help urgently needed at this time before the onset of the huge building con- struction program which will be commenced by middle of summer in the amount of some 50 to 60 million dollars , and cited comparison between building permits issued last year of $ 381 , 574 . 00 in January , as against that of $2 , 980 , 018 . 00 this year , little of which was attributable to Redwood Shores , He further advised this request for additional personnel had been included in Building Department ' s preliminary Budget for last year , but deleted as it was felt present personnel could carry through until the end of the year , but it was now felt a disservice to public and Staff would result if additional personnel not added now . He also made point that this Department is one of few Depart- ments which are self - supporting, through increased building permits and fees . Motion carried . It was also noted funds in the amount of $ 3 , 450 would be necessary for equipment for new personnel .
