( MINUTE ORDER NO . 69- 77 )
Councilman Arnett moved to adopt RESOLUTION NO . 5970 APPROVING PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS
FOR PENINSULA PARKWAY - SECTION 1 AND BRIDGE PARKWAY - SECTION 1 ( 645 -4-46 ) FOR
REDWOOD CITY GENERAL IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT NO , 1 -64 ; AND , AUTHORIZING CITY CLERK TO
CALL FOR BIDS THEREFOR , seconded by Councilman Rosselli . Motion carried on roll
call vote .
City Manager reported on intended change in fencing in Redwood Shores and commented
on the earlier report by Mr . Sue , landscape architectural consultant , wherein the
type of fencing orginally planned was precast concrete . However , since that time ,
Staff has gone more thoroughly into the problems on this type fencing and concluded
that the District could not economically provide funds for it , and had requested
Mr . Sue to review and submit an alternate design . This has been studied by the
Urban Design Committee , our Staff , DMJM and Leslie Properties . Recommended alter-
native was a pressure -treated redwood fencing . 880r of fencing will be installed
adjacent to parkways in Subdivision 1 to give completed appearance to first sub -
division .
Councilman Rosselli expressed unwillingness to accept the revised design , if cost
was only factor , unless engineering and structural consideration , as well as dura -
bility were involved , City Manager advised there was substantial difference in
cost between the redwood and the concrete design , and additional cost involved in
construction ; also , to keep precast concrete to a desirable minimum weight , it
would be necessary to cut down on thickness . It was stated pressure - treated red-
wood fence could be expected to last thirty years . Also , with the landscaping
planned along the parkways , fence would be visible only in the initial stages ,
until growth of the plantings develops to the point where fencing would be ob -
scured . Consideration was given these factors , and the difference per lineal
foot between the precast concrete at $ 13 . 00 and the redwood at $ 8 . 00 .
Mr . Sue showed sketch of the proposed fencing , advising it would be 6 feet in
height , chemically treated to prevent rot , and advised structure would last for
approximately as long as the dwelling . There was discussion concerning increas -
ing lumber costs , and Mr . Sue responded this fence would still be the best buy
for the money .
APR 23 '69
