2012 Survey of Beekeeping Complaints in San Mateo County

In 2012, the Bee Legal Task Force of the San Mateo County Beekeepers’ Guild conducted a survey of beekeeping complaints in
21 jurisdictions in San Mateo County. The 13 jurisdictions that responded to the data request reported that no citations had been
issued and that there were nearly no beekeeping complaints.

All responding jurisdictions that managed beekeeping under nuisance ordinance reported no beekeeping complaints.

Responding Jurisdictions:No Response:
Atherton Portola Valley Belmont San Mateo County
Brisbane Millbrae East Palo Alto South San Francisco
Burlingame Redwood City Hillsborough
Colma San Carlos Menlo Park
Daly City San Mateo Pacifica
Foster City Woodside San Bruno
Half Moon Bay

Number of Complaints
11 jurisdictions reported no complaints over the period of time they had records (110 years)
2 jurisdictions reported 23 complaints each over a 1year period
No citations were issued: all complaints were resolved without citations

Nature of Complaints
Of the two jurisdictions reporting complaints, none collected data on nature of complaints.
Based on code enforcement officials’ memory in one jurisdiction, two of the three complaints were that a beekeeper had a
hive under conditions not permitted by a restrictive beekeeping ordinance not because a beehive was resulting in an
actual nuisance.

For additional information, please contact the Bee Legal Task Force of the San Mateo County Beekeepers’ Guild.

1
7.
A
.

-

P
a
g
e

1
0
