4/14/2016 Beekeeping proposal CDDiana ODell
https://webmail.redwoodcity.org/owa/#viewmodel=ReadMessageItem&ItemID=AAMkAGU0OTk0ZjUyLTMxZTctNGU4ZC1hMjg3LTEyODg5NjJlMWE0NABG…1/1
Bee‐keeping proposal
Ms. O’ Dell
I cannot attend tonight’s Planning Commission Meeting, but want to communicate my strong opposition to the proposal
to reduce setbacks for beehives.
The current regulation, which keeps hives 150 feet from neighbors, exists for very serious health and life safety reasons.
Backyard hobbyists or commercial beekeepers do not belong in urban areas and should find a more appropriate rural
location for their activities.
— As a Geographer, I fully understand the roll of bees in the environment and the threat to their numbers and its
consequences. I support raising bees in rural environments, but not in urban environments.
— As a person who is allergic to bee stings, I must strongly oppose a change in regulations for bee keeping in Redwood
City. it is already very hard for me to avoid this threat to my health in the general urban environment — I can’t even
imagine living near a property where bees are raised. Frankly, I can’t believe that Redwood City would knowingly put me
in jeopardy.
Perhaps a compromise is possible and the beekeepers could locate their hives on City or County land in the hills away
from at‐risk urban residents.
Roni Wade, Ph.D.
Roni Wade Tue 4/5/2016 12:14 PM
To:CD‐Diana ODell <dodell@redwoodcity.org>;
Categories:Noticing and Comments from the Public
7.A. - Page 11
