Civic Cultural Commission Page 2
Minutes of March 7, 2002
students. The TAB is inviting students to enter their poetry and art work and
TAB members are working with local art and English teachers to encourage
students to participate. All art and poetry will be judged by teachers and
members of the TAB and prizes will be awarded.
M/S Britschgi/Del Carlo: To provide the Commission's support of the
Cultural High event.
Motion passed.
Commissioner Del Carlo introduced Mary McClure to the Commission.
The following item was taken out of order:
ITEM 2 — SUB-COMMITTEE REPORT
Children and Schools, Status of Music Programs at Local Schools
Former Civic Cultural Commissioner Jeff Filippi spoke to the Commission
about the history of the instrumental music program in the Redwood City
Elementary Schools and at Sequoia High School. He discussed the
development of the "Music is Instrumental" program and its success which
has increased the number of music students in the elementary district from
209 to over 500 over a five year period. Mr. Filippi was concerned because
the music program (vocal and band) at Sequoia High School has been
eliminated and the music teacher has been let go. He felt that music
students from the elementary "feeder" schools would have to go to Woodside
or Carlmont High Schools because Sequoia does not have a viable music
program in place. Mr. Filippi stated that Sequoia High School has had nine
music teachers since 1980 and that the music program did well under the
guidance of some of its dynamic teachers. He suggested that Sequoia High
School utilize previous Sequoia music teachers as consultants to help re-
vitalize the music program.
The Commissioners discussed the renovation of Carrington Hall, how the
Commission might refer groups to use the facility, providing grants for
performances at the facility, scheduling conflicts at the facility, and the need
for a governing board after the renovation to insure the facility is well
managed. Mr. Filippi suggested the Commission send a letter to Principal
Morgan Marchbanks, Sequoia Union High School District Superintendent
JoAnn Smith, and the Board of Trustees expressing the Commission's
concerns.
