Civic Cultural Commission Page 3 <br /> Minutes of June 6, 2002 <br /> -Miss Redwood City Scholarship Association <br /> G.H. Armour spoke about the 2002 Miss Redwood City Scholarship Pageant <br /> and the benefits of the scholarships provided to the recipients. The grant <br /> would provide educational scholarships for the 2003 pageant. <br /> -Montalvo <br /> Erika Justice thanked the Commission for last year's support. She announced <br /> that the number of performances for this season has been increased from 5 <br /> to 21 due to favorable community response. Ms. Justice announced an <br /> outreach event at the Fox will be done in conjunction with the Redwood City <br /> School District to bring students to the facility for performances. <br /> -North Star Academy <br /> Santiago Guajardo, principal of North Star Academy, spoke about current <br /> budgetary issues facing the school, North Star's focus on the performing arts, <br /> and the school putting on 3 to 4 productions per year. They are requesting <br /> 100% funding of their next production. <br /> Commissioner Ball spoke in support of providing a continued level funding for <br /> the arts in the schools. Chairperson Dale suggesting composing a letter <br /> supporting the arts in our schools and the relationship of arts and education, <br /> and asked that it be placed on the July agenda. <br /> -Nova Visa Symphony <br /> David Richards spoke about their grant request which will be used as seed <br /> money to put on an initial performance at the Fox. He hopes this will help <br /> raise the interest level in classical music in the community. He stated that <br /> the symphony currently plays at Foothill College. <br /> -Peninsula Children's Theatre Association <br /> Lynda Evjen explained the group originated in 1951 and provides three <br /> shows per year for young children. The group builds all the sets, does all the <br /> music and the acting. She stated that they have used Canada College for the <br /> past 15 years but can no longer afford to use the facility due to increased <br /> rental costs. The group is looking for a grant to help with rental costs of a <br /> new facility. <br /> -Peninsula Pops Orchestra <br /> Kim Venaas stated Peninsula Pops is the only pops orchestra in the Bay Area <br /> and they currently perform at Spangenberg Theater in Palo Alto and rehearse <br /> in Redwood City. The grant will be used as seed money to put on a "live <br /> radio show" performance at the Fox Theater. <br /> -Peninsula Symphony Association <br /> Margarit Rinderknecht explained this is their 54th season and they currently <br /> perform at the Flint Center and the San Mateo Center for the Performing <br /> Arts. She spoke about working on a project to bring children to the Fox, <br />
