Civic Cultural Commission Page 2
Minutes of July 11, 2002
discovery that having the concerts at Stafford Park were the most successful
and well attended.
Elizabeth Travers of 27 Lowell Street stated she received the sub-
committee's recommendations and that she did not agree with several of the
recommendations presented. She felt that alternate concert sites are
available; the concerts should be moved to another venue or rotated; noise
levels are too high and need to be monitored; and consideration of a dinner
fund reimbursement due to a donation from an anonymous donor. Mrs.
Travers brought pictures of other parks she took last Sunday to show the
activity in other parks as compared to Stafford.
Rick Orvik of 134 King Street spoke in support of the summer concert series
and the renovation of Stafford Park. He expressed his approval of the
concert series remaining at Stafford Park and felt that the bands should be
given more freedom to play past the 8:00pm deadline. Mr. Orvick felt the
concerts were a wonderful community event and gave people an opportunity
to relax after a stressful day.
Vice Chairperson Douglas felt the concert should be open to all community
members including residents of other cities. He also felt that continuity of
concert locations was easier for the attendees. He spoke about the
acceptable decibel levels at last night's concert. Commissioner Britschgi
stated the Commission is trying to improve the cultural events in Redwood
City and the concert series is one of the Commission's more popular events.
Craig Smith of 58 Lowell Street felt that having the concerts on a weekly
basis brought a higher level of intensity to the park. He reported that on
weekends the park has become a real magnet as a `party" park and there
are people drinking and bringing in BBQs, which are both prohibited.
Chairperson Dale stated the Police Department should be called when
someone is violating the park rules and regulations. Mr. Smith was afraid of
retaliation when calling to report people breaking the rules. He felt that the
park was changing due to the weekly summer concerts. Mr. Orvik stated
that he likes the weekly concerts at Stafford and would like them to be
extended longer into the summer. Commissioner Ball stated that the eight
summer concerts bring a total of 16 hours of entertainment per year to
Stafford Park.
Mrs. Travers stated she polled 10 Stafford Park neighbors and 6 of them
would prefer not to have the concerts at Stafford. Director Centeno reviewed
the results of the 2001 Concert Survey sent to neighbors within two blocks of
the park. Approximately 70 surveys were mailed out and 46 responses were
received. Mr. Smith said he would like to see the concerts rotate to different
parks and have them held on alternate weeks.
