Civic Cultural Commission Page 3
Minutes of July 11, 2002
Chairperson Dale reported that at last night's concert, he counted 72 children
under the age of 6 who were dancing in front of the band. He noticed people
at the concert had purchased food from food establishments, which helps
with the local economy. He liked seeing families and friends enjoying the
park. He agreed that we should continue to monitor the sound level and ask
the Police Department to enforce park rules and regulations. Surveys will
again be done at the end of the 2002 concert series, with a special survey
sent to the surrounding neighbors.
M/S Douglas/Britschgi: To accept the recommendations of the Sub-
Committee for the 2002 Concert Series season and agree to re-
survey the neighborhood and concert attendees.
Commissioner Del Carlo stated the sub-committee was trying to look at all
the issues before making its recommendations. Chairperson Dale said that
every person has a vote on the survey and that the Commission makes their
decision based on the survey results.
Motion passed unanimously.
Commissioner Britschgi felt we would be "opening a can of worms" by
providing a dinner fund reimbursement. The Commissioners discussed
questions to be included in the survey, the survey being mailed to the same
block area, and providing surveys to attendees at the last two concerts of the
year.
Mr. Smith suggested that the surveys ask people for one other possible
concert location. He also suggested that if there were eight concerts, that
four could be at Red Morton and four at Stafford and could be alternated
every other week. Announcements could be made each week to the
audience so they would be reminded of the location of the next concert.
Commissioner Britschgi stated the results of the 2001 concert surveys
indicated an interest in Sunday concerts and she asked the audience their
opinion. Several felt that the park is already impacted on the weekends with
large crowds and did not like the idea.
ITEM 2 — BUDGET
The Commissioners were presented with a proposal from the Budget Sub-
Committee on the 2002 Large Grant applications. Chairperson Dale reviewed
the process for developing the funding amounts based on the Commission's
proposed FY02-03 budget, which will not be approved by Council until late
July. He suggested that the Commission re-visit the budget in six months in
order to increase Commission funding from $1.00 to $2.00 per capita.
The Commissioners took a recess at 8:40pm and reconvened at 8:42pm.
