estimated that approximately 20% of the senior population is on a fixed <br /> income consisting of Social Security and/or SSI ($650.00 a month or less). <br /> Superintendent Hartman said that the Commission needs to educate the City <br /> Council on these senior issues and also needs to obtain accurate <br /> information for the education process. Various Commissioners and staff <br /> members made suggestions on where to obtain accurate statistical <br /> information on seniors and will report back to the Commission. <br /> ROUNDTABLE <br /> -Commisioners Anthony and Lloyd will be participating in "The Human Race" <br /> on Saturday, May 10 on behalf of RSVP. <br /> -Commissioner Anthony reported that the Commission on Aging will be <br /> traveling to Sacramento on May 20 to meet the State Legislature. People <br /> from various senior groups will be participating in this event and <br /> Commissioners Anthony and Metzdorf will attend. <br /> -Commissioner Berglund reported that he went to Los Angeles with AARP to <br /> attend a meeting of VOTE (a section of AARP) concerning a national health <br /> care program. VOTE is trying make the legislature more aware of the health <br /> care crisis. Over 34 million people (including children) in the United <br /> States do not have medical coverage and health costs have risen 12% which <br /> is above current inflation levels. He said there is talk about creating a <br /> national sales tax to help subsidize this program and it would take 4-5 <br /> years for the program to begin. He said they also saw a film on Canada's <br /> nationalized health care program. <br /> -Chairperson Jordan said there will be a hearing to discuss the effects of <br /> the ADA regulations on May 9 at the AC Transit Building, 1600 Franklin <br /> Street in Oakland at 9:30am for those people interested in attending. <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was adjourned at <br /> 10:30am to be reconvened at 9:00am on June 12 at the Fair Oaks Senior <br /> Center, 2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, California. <br />
