Senior Affairs Commission Page 3 <br /> Minutes of Thursday,January 10,2002 <br /> -Public Awareness &Access to Services <br /> Commissioner L. Walsh reported that HMOs are making more cuts to <br /> healthcare for seniors. Commissioner Moran warned about a residential <br /> robbery scam and announced that Redwood City fire stations offer free blood <br /> pressure readings. Commissioner Borgens reported that free health <br /> screenings are being offered at Sequoia Health and Wellness Services. <br /> -Strategic Planning <br /> Commissioner Borgens reported that no meeting had been held but was <br /> awaiting information regarding the housing element of San Carlos's general <br /> plan. <br /> Item 3 - Program Updates <br /> -Fair Oaks Community Center <br /> Susan Houston reported that Fair Oaks Senior Center now has a part time <br /> bilingual case manager, by the name of Carla Garcia, who is linking seniors <br /> with services. New computer and creative memoirs classes, offered by <br /> Sequoia Adult School, started in January. Attendance was down in December <br /> due to the holidays and illness. <br /> -Veterans Memorial Senior Center & Senior Services <br /> Manager Griffith reported ads for the Gift Shop and health programs will be <br /> placed in the Daily News. Such promotion has been successful in the past. <br /> Cindy Jimenez was introduced as the new Volunteer Specialist. Yelena has <br /> been working on the next Citywide Activities Guide, with an effort to show <br /> the collaboration between Fair Oaks and Veterans Memorial Senior Centers <br /> and to showcase the Senior Affairs Commission and its importance. New <br /> ideas are always welcome. Free vision screening will be offered in January. <br /> A Saturday breakfast and lecture will be offered on February 23, 2002. <br /> -Special Projects or Programs <br /> The Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Festival will be held at the Veterans <br /> Memorial Senior Center on Monday, January 21, 2002. Many different <br /> activities are planned for this intergenerational community event. <br /> More staffing is needed for Information and Referral and scheduling of <br /> transportation and health lectures, as is funding for another part time driver <br /> and possible special licensing. <br /> ANNOUNCEMENTS <br /> Commissioner Borgens announced that Vincent Truscelli was selected to <br /> receive the Sequoia Award this year. Yelena announced the February 14th, <br /> Valentine Dinner Dance from 6:00 - 9:30 p.m. Tickets will be available next <br /> week. Manager Griffith announced the Women's History celebration on <br /> Saturday, March 9, 2002 at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center. All are <br /> invited. <br />
