-Commissioner Jordan referred to a copy of a letter received from a group
of local geriatric social workers regarding the cancellation of a core
policy class in aging specialization at San Jose State University. The
Commissioners discussed this matter and Supervisor Kucala said she will
check into this matter and will meet with Superintendent Hartman and
Chairperson Anthony to discuss further. This matter will be placed on the
January agenda.
ITEM 1 - San Mateo Resource Team
Chairperson Anthony said the San Mateo Resource Team met last month at
Sterling Court in San Mateo and all members were given a copy of our survey
results. All members were interested in the information and will give us
information in return. The team is currently looking for a representative
from the Coastside area.
ITEM 2 - Transportation
Commissioner Jordan reported that the Redi-Wheels program is not working
well and that service levels have deteriorated under the new system
provided by Mayflower. Chairperson Anthony said SamTrans will be holding
three public meetings in San Carlos, San Bruno and Coastside to listen to
the problems the public is experiencing with paratransit services. The
Commissioners reported on various problems regarding the current system.
Commissioner Lloyd said he read in the paper that they are accepting
applications for two openings on the SamTrans Board of Directors and
applications could be picked up at their San Carlos office.
ITEM 3 - Election of Officers for 1994
M/S Lloyd/Jordan: To elect Jack Anthony as chairperson of the Senior
Affairs Commission for 1994.
Unanimously passed.
M/S Truscelli/Jordan: To elect Geary Lloyd was vice chairperson of the
Senior Affairs Commission for 1994.
Unanimously passed.
ITEM 4 - Future Plans
-Follow up on Recommendations
Chairperson Anthony said he has set up a meeting with the City Manager
to discuss the recommendations presented at our recent study session with
the City Council. He wants to review these recommendations and determine
where we need to go from here and would also like to obtain an inventory of
property that is owned by the City which could be used for affordable
housing for seniors. He said he would like to recommend that a bus or van
be purchased for the Veterans Memorial Senior Center and that the City
provide the maintenance and insurance. TEWCI Chairperson Roger Willey
asked that the Fair Oaks Senior Center also be included in this request and
Chairperson Anthony said that any recommendations made would include both
senior centers.
Supervisor Kucala mentioned that a smaller bus/van which could handle a
smaller group of people but still accommodate 1-2 wheelchairs would be
better than a 21 passenger bus because it would not require someone with a
Class A driver's license to operate it. Commissioner Lloyd suggested that
funds could be borrowed from the senior groups to purchase a bus/van if the
City would cover the maintenance costs of the vehicle. Chairperson Anthony
