operate and should not require special certification for the City's fleet
maintenance staff to service.
Commissioner Truscelli said he completed extensive research on a van for
the Senior Center recently and would work with Mary Kucala and Erlinda
Tulioc. Superintendent Hartman said she would check with Fleet Manager
Larry Barwacz to determine what the maintenance costs would be for a new
van/bus. Executive Director Bransford said the TEWCI bus insurance is
picked up by the County at the cost of$600.00 per year and is driven by a
special driver who is paid hourly with benefits. Chairperson Anthony said
the bus/van needs to be accessible, but the majority of disabled people who
come to the senior center would be transported by SamTrans.
5.) Maintain Human Service Assistance funding levels for the Senior Centers
and the senior programs.
6.) Have City look into purchasing low income housing for seniors, such as a
mobile home park.
Chairperson Anthony said that he wants to ensure that funding is not
decreased for human services assistance but not at the cost of decreasing the
budget somewhere else in the department. Superintendent Hartman
suggested that a representative from the Commission needs to attend the
Housing and Human Concerns Committee meetings to be informed of
budget and housing information as it relates to seniors. Chairperson
Anthony and Commissioner Lloyd will alternate attendance at the monthly
meetings of the Housing and Human Concerns Committee. Chairperson
Anthony said he went to the Planning Commission on behalf of the Senior
Affairs Commission recently to show our support of changing zoning
regulations to help increase low income housing in the community.
7.) Have City Council recommend to the Board of Supervisors an exemption
for seniors transporting other seniors.
Chairperson Anthony said he plans to speak with Supervisors Nevin and
Lempert to gain their support of this recommendation. Superintendent
Hartman said Supervisor Kucala will speak to the Senior Center Directors'
group she is a member of to enlist their support. Commissioner Lloyd said he
would contact Mary Pappas of Hi-Cap to see how their group obtained their
exemption.
Superintendent Hartman said most of the recommendations require more
research and fact finding on the Commission's part before going back to the
City Council with a final report.
ITEM 2-FOLLOW UP ON AGING CLASSES AT SAN JOSE STATE
Supervisor Kucala was unable to attend today's meeting. The matter will be
deferred until the February meeting.
