Counseling Program. He has discussed this matter with Marianne Mannia
who has some ideas about the program. She has indicated that there are a
number of retired social workers who might be willing to assist with the
training of the peer counselors and mentioned she would like to include the
Fair Oaks Senior Center in this program. Commissioner Lloyd suggested
meeting with Delia Moonrider to further discuss the program. Ms. Mannia
will set up the meeting with Delia Moonrider which will include herself,
Commissioner Lloyd, Marie Walsh, and Executive Director Bransford. This
matter will be placed on the August agenda. Ms. Mannia asked about
requiring liability insurance or a waiver of insurance for the peer counselors.
Commissioner Lloyd indicated that Kaiser and other hospitals have dropped
out of the program.
ITEM 4-DISCUSSION ABOUT COMMISSION
-OBJECTIVES,DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Chairperson Anthony reviewed the recommendations that were made to the
City Council last fall and updated the Commissioners on the status of each
one. One of the recommendations included purchasing a van for the
Veterans Memorial Senior Center and he stated the Senior Advisory Council
has allocated $40,000.00 to purchase a vehicle. Superintendent Hartman
announced that the City Council approved paying for the maintenance and
insurance for the Senior Center van and also approved the purchase of a
separate van for the Accessible Recreation Program. Erlinda Tulioc is setting
up a van demonstration at 9:30am for the August 3 meeting of the Senior
Advisory Council. Representatives from various groups including the Auto
Shop, Therapeutic Recreation, and youth groups will be attending the
demonstration along with the Senior Affairs Commission and the Veterans
Memorial Senior Advisory Council. Ms. Mannia suggested asking
representatives from SamTrans to attend the demonstration in order to make
a recommendation on the most appropriate type of van for the Senior Center.
Commissioner Capone mentioned that she delivers books to a homebound
citizen through the Library's outreach program and suggested obtaining a
copy of the Library's client list for the Senior Center's outreach program. Ms.
Mannia spoke about the need for the "Friendly Visitors Program" and has
discussed this with the person who originated the concept. She feels that we
should focus this program to people who are in board and care facilities.
Executive Director Bransford spoke about a similar program operated by the
Fair Oaks Senior Center which involves volunteers from the Rotary Club and
a church group who go out to visit seniors in the community. She noted the
program is working out very well and mentioned the Rotary Club also buys
seniors additional food if they see there is a need. Commissioner Lloyd
mentioned there is a group at the Veterans Senior Center that also goes out to
visit homebound veterans in the community.
