Commissioner Newell suggested contacting the Meals on Wheels Program to <br /> identify the homebound seniors they deliver to in Redwood City. He also <br /> suggested delivering a newsletter along with their meal as a way of <br /> connecting with those seniors. Commissioner Newell also suggested <br /> contacting the Volunteers in Money Management program (VIMM) to <br /> determine how many participants are Redwood City residents. He <br /> commented on the success of the Intergenerational Program and perhaps <br /> considering recruiting high school students who might interact with <br /> homebound seniors as part of their school service project. The Commission <br /> could also work with the schools to have children identify grandparents who <br /> are homebound and needing visitors. <br /> Chairperson Anthony said he would like one of the Commissioners to <br /> become a member of the Housing and Human Concerns Committee or begin <br /> attending their meetings. He asked Library Supervisor Val Hamilton to assist <br /> the Commission in obtaining a list of people in the Library's outreach <br /> program and also a description of the program's operation. He also suggested <br /> the Commissioners consider revising the list of goals of the Commission and <br /> asked for their suggestions. This matter will be placed on the August agenda. <br /> Executive Director Bransford explained the Fair Oaks Senior Center is <br /> working with Hawes School to help develop an intergenerational program. <br /> She also has a group of 30 students who come to the Center in the mornings <br /> to work with seniors to help them become bi-lingual. <br /> A report on the Nutrition Program for the Veterans Memorial Senior Center <br /> and the Fair Oaks Senior Center will be placed on the August agenda. <br /> ITEM 5-TRANSPORTATION <br /> Chairperson Anthony clarified that the bus to be purchased by the Senior <br /> Advisory Council will provide for more flexibility and will be used for <br /> disabled and abled persons with the emphasis placed on bringing homebound <br /> seniors to the Center. Commissioner Newell recommended that our efforts <br /> not supplant what Redi-Wheels also offers and we should not take over their <br /> role. The Commissioners discussed the criteria which needs to be established <br /> for riding the new vehicle and placing a priority on people who do not drive. <br /> ITEM 6-REPORT ON COUNCIL BUDGET SESSIONS <br /> Superintendent Hartman announced the Department's proposed budget was <br /> approved by the City Council including additional hours for an evening <br /> facility aide at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center.
