the other proposal has no Section 8 units and 83 units. The Committee will
hear the presentations and then make a recommendation to the City Council.
The models and presentation boards for both developers are located in the
Old Library for review.
Ms. Jones-Thomas said the Housing and Human Concerns Committee is
recommending a funding allocation process for the Consolidation Plan. She
asked the Commissioners for their input regarding public facility needs,
housing needs for seniors and to identify any gaps in service provided to
seniors. Commissioner Anthony said he would like to see the City purchase
the property located at St. Francis Street and Madison Avenue for the
construction of a senior housing complex. Commissioner Newell felt there
was a shortage of assisted living housing in Redwood City, particularly for
people on Medi-Cal. Many times people are forced to go into nursing homes
even though it is not necessary. He said many seniors do not necessarily
want to live just with seniors and that some housing should be open to all
ages.
The Commissioners discussed adult day care facilities and some research that
was done on this subject several years ago which indicated that it was cost
prohibitive for Redwood City to establish their own facility. Redwood City
senior clients are currently well served by Rosener House in Menlo Park and
Catholic Charities in San Carlos. Superintendent Hartman said Director
Bransford indicated many seniors at the Fair Oaks Senior Center are in need
of adult day care but do not want to go to Rosener House. Commissioner
Newell felt visits should be made to Rosener House and Catholic Charities to
determine if they are at capacity and what portion of the participants are
Redwood City residents. He felt that although adult day care in Redwood City
is not a need at the present, it may be in the future. Ms. Jones-Thomas stated
that over 30 Redwood City residents are now being subsidized at these two
facilities. The Commissioners discussed updating their information on both
facilities and Supervisor Griffith offered her assistance. This matter will be
placed on a future agenda.
Ms. Jones-Thomas announced two new staff people in the Housing
Department are doing marketing and would like to perform outreach to
seniors. She said a housing representative would like to come to the two
senior centers to talk about housing and what is available to seniors.
Ms. Jones-Thomas said Code Enforcement Officer Jerry Schnell was checking
into the problems at Redwood City Commons. Commons resident Noreen
Donohue said the roof is still leaking and was told that cable tv was in the
process. Ms. Jones-Thomas said she will contact Mr. Schnell to follow up on
his report. She mentioned that the City could recommend that the Peninsula
Conflict Resolution Center (PCRC) mediate the issue of cable tv between the
building owner and the senior residents. Commissioner Newell mentioned
