that Bonnie Brae Terrace in Belmont was able to provide cable tv for its
residents and Chairperson Lloyd asked if he could check with Bonnie Brae to
see how they accomplished this task.
Ms. Jones-Thomas said the City has bought five units on Rolison Road but
noted it was not recommended that this housing include seniors because of
security and transportation issues. The Lone Star site on Franklin Street is
within a couple of years of construction and will include approximately 500
units. The Main-Middlefield Project will include 83 to 85 units and will be
30% senior housing.
She stated the Housing and Human Concerns Committee will be dissolved at
5:00pm on January 16. Fourteen applications have been received for the nine
seats on the committee. Interviews with the City Council will be held on
January 23 and appointments will be made January 30.
ITEM 1-DISCUSSION OF GARBAGE RATES
Financial Services Manager Judy Somers spoke about the proposed increase
in garbage collection rates for Redwood City residents. She explained that fees
to the City have increased due to cost of landfill and requirements for
disposing of garbage. Costs at Ox Mountain have increased 50% alone.
Recycling efforts mandated by the State have also increased our costs.
Previously rates were shared evenly by other cities but it was discovered that
each city was providing different types of services. As a result, each city will
have their own rate based on what services will be provided. Proposed
increases include an increase of 4.84% (or .50 cents) for a 40 gallon container;
10.5% for two 40 gallon containers; 60% for a 60 gallon container; Lifeline
rates for one 20 gallon container would be reduced from $7.91 to $5.14 or 35%.
Commissioner Anthony suggested publicizing the proposed rates before it
gets approved by the City Council so that seniors and low income residents
have a chance to speak out and mitigate the increases. The Commissioners
discussed the fact that more recycling education needs to be done for the
public and what opportunities there are to reduce their garbage output. It was
suggested that BFI speak to seniors to help in their recycling efforts and also to
the Senior Affairs Commission.
ITEM 3 -TRANSPORTATION
The Transportation Committee rescheduled their meeting for January 20 at
10:00am in the conference room of the Resource Building.
