schools in the district. In order to accomplish this expansion effort, there is a
need for additional volunteer time, administrative time, and especially
additional teacher time. Also discussed was the "Senior Pal" program which
matches seniors with "at risk" students. In this program, the senior reads to
their assigned student and also gives them personalized attention.
A lunch was held on February 23 to thank the senior participants in the
Intergenerational program and the City Council issued a proclamation to the
Intergenerational Program at their March 27 meeting. Assistant Recreation
Supervisor Tova Sweet is coordinating with Pam Thornberg and Carol
Milestone a Cinco de Mayo celebration for the Intergenerational Program.
The celebration will include pinata making for the students, a fund raising
lunch, intergenerational pinata breaking, and a Mexican folkloric dancing
performance by Raices de Mexico.
Supervisor Griffith mentioned that school ends on June 16 and new
programs, including music and gardening, are being proposed for the coming
school year. It was noted that the theatrical event held 2 years ago by the
Intergenerational Program took between 1,200-2,000 volunteer hours to
produce.
Supervisor Griffith also explained the fingerprinting requirements for staff
and volunteers who work with children under the age of 18. A program is
currently being developed by our department and the Human Resources
Department to meet this requirement. It was estimated that it would cost
approximately $8,000.00 to fingerprint volunteers in Park and Recreation and
Library Department programs.
ITEM 3-TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE REPORT
Superintendent Hartman reported that the Transportation Committee
consisting of Chairperson Lloyd, Commissioner Anthony, Vince Truscelli,
Supervisor Griffith and she have met over the past four months and have
developed a final recommendation regarding the purchase of the van for the
Veterans Memorial Senior Center. The Committee looked at all aspects of
the transportation program including costs to hire drivers for the van and a
scheduling and dispatch coordinator. They also looked at funding provided
by the Veterans Memorial Senior Advisory Council (VMSAC), which for
Fiscal Year 95-96 will total approximately $150,000. The VMSAC currently
pays for a driver for the current van at a cost of $7,000-8,000 annually. Based
on future funding, the VMSAC felt they could not fund anymore programs
than they are currently funding. The purchase of a new vehicle would cost
between $40,000-60,000 and the requirements and training of a new driver
would be more costly and extensive. The committee therefore recommended
that the van not be purchased at this time. Funds designated for a van
purchase by the VMSAC will be set aside for this purpose.
