Vice Chairperson Anthony expressed his disappointment of not purchasing
the van. He stated that SamTrans has been contacted to assist in the training
of drivers and riders of the Center's van.
Over 700 transportation surveys were printed and distributed at various
locations throughout the City. Only 27 surveys were returned and 7 to 9 were
received from non-residents. The Commissioners discussed the fact that
many seniors do not use Rediwheels because of the stigma attached and that
they feel they may be losing their independence if they use the service. Many
problems regarding Rediwheels were mentioned including the fact that
people wait long periods of time to be picked up and scheduling is impossible.
It was noted that many people do not feel comfortable complaining about the
Rediwheels service. Supervisor Griffith said she wanted to do more
education to groups about the Rediwheels program, how it operates and how
to apply.
Commissioner Newell felt the application process for Rediwheels is a
problem and suggested having applications available at the Senior Center. It
was suggested following up with those persons who returned surveys to
determine if they might be eligible for transportation. Education workshops
regarding the Rediwheels program were also suggested.
ITEM 4-BUDGET
Superintendent Hartman announced the department will be having its
budget review with the City Manager on April 18 and explained the budget
process to the Commissioners. Budget hearings with the City Council will be
held on July 10, July 15, and July 17. She reviewed the department's proposed
requests and areas where increases are being proposed. She mentioned that
the City will fund $500,000 towards the operation and maintenance of the
Veterans Memorial Senior Center and the VMSAC has voted to fund
approximately $88,000.00 which includes the nutrition program and the staff
costs for this program. The VMSAC has also agreed to fund the replacement
of some exercise equipment, tables and chairs for the Center.
The following items were taken out of order:
ITEM 7-REPORT ON HSFA&CDBG FUNDING PROPOSALS
Superintendent Hartman reviewed the recommendations of the Housing
and Human Concerns Committee regarding the funding for the HSFA and
CDBG programs. Senior groups receiving funding include Catholic Charities,
Rosener House, RSVP, and TEWCI. The total amount of grant requests
exceeded the $200,000 funding available. The final recommendations will go
before the City Council on July 10.
