Commissioner Newell felt we need to educate the City Council on senior <br /> needs in Redwood City and would like peer counseling put on the December <br /> agenda for further discussion. Supervisor Griffith said the subject of <br /> depression should also be discussed under the same item. Chairperson Lloyd <br /> will arrange to have Harry Farmer speak on the subject of peer counseling <br /> and Supervisor Griffith will arrange for someone from TIES to speak on the <br /> issue of depression. <br /> The Commissioners set up a schedule of topics to be discussed at future <br /> meetings: <br /> December - Peer Counseling <br /> January - Health Care <br /> February - Consumer Watch <br /> March - Elder Abuse-legal issues <br /> April - <br /> Commissioner Newell suggested that a standing agenda item be placed on <br /> each month's agenda so that each Commissioner could report on their <br /> particular area of responsibility on the workplan and could speak for 3-4 <br /> minutes on their. The item will be entitled "Progress Report from <br /> Commissioners on Workplan Assignments". <br /> ITEM 2-HOUSING <br /> Commissioner Newell gave each of the Commissioners his comprehensive <br /> report on assisted living housing units in Redwood City. He explained that <br /> assisted living helps an individual remain in their homes without having to <br /> go into a nursing home. Assisted living can provide personal care, help with <br /> medications, meals, laundry and other necessities to individuals. Long term <br /> care includes help with household chores to being in a nursing home. <br /> Commissioner Newell reviewed the list of assisted living units in Redwood <br /> City and their associated costs and said he contacted some of the larger <br /> facilities to obtain further information. He spoke about the qualifications and <br /> levels of income needed to get into an assisted living unit. <br /> Commissioner Newell stated he met with Debbi Jones-Thomas and gave her <br /> a copy of his report and discussed his idea for a pilot program to provide <br /> funds for assisted living in low income housing in Redwood City. His <br /> proposal would identify people currently in low income facilities who are in <br /> need of assisted living. Funds would be provided for this service and would <br /> require the cooperation of the owners of the facilities. Ms. Jones-Thomas was <br /> very receptive to the idea and said she would contact the facility owners. She <br /> invited Commissioner Newell to the October meeting of the Housing and <br /> Human Concerns Committee where he discussed the pilot program. They <br /> were very receptive and asked him to come back and make a formal <br />
