ITEM 3 -TRANSPORTATION -Educational Forum Update Commissioner Newell said he is still working on this matter. -Update on Van Purchase Decision Superintendent Hartman gave the Commissioners a copy of a memo dated April 3, 1995 to the Veterans Memorial Senior Advisory Council (VMSAC) from the Transportation Committee with their recommendations regarding the van purchase in FY95-96. She explained the Committee recommended that an accessible van not be purchased due to lack of funds to operate an increased transportation program, and that the VMSAC not take on any additional transportation commitments for FY95-96 because of cost. Although the VMSAC has the funds available to purchase the van, they did not feel they could take on the additional costs for the transportation program. The funds for the van are still being held aside by the VMSAC but they are still not in a position to make an additional commitment. Superintendent Hartman noted that some revision needs to be done to our current transportation program regarding driver requirements and SamTrans may be able to assist in the training of our new driver. Criteria still needs to be developed for determining who is eligible to ride in the van. She noted there are currently 20-25 people using the van service. Supervisor Griffith said Rediwheels has improved during its weekday operation service but that people are experiencing poor service on the weekends. ITEM 4-CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES FORUM Secretary Monroe reported she has contacted the City Attorney's Office twice regarding the Commission's request to hold a candidates forum but has not received a response. The suggestion of having the League of Women Voters sponsor a candidates forum at the Senior Center is probably a more viable option. Commissioner Walsh suggested having a meeting with the City Council during the first half of 1996. Superintendent Hartman suggested the Commissioners personally contact individual City Council members to advocate for senior issues and to invite them to one of our meetings. Copies of the material from the 1994 Study Session will be sent to each of the Commissioners.
