BFI Recycling Manager Debi Sargent said BFI does have a weekly recycling
program which includes containers for newspaper, glass, and cans that can be
picked up at the curb or at a gate. She said BFI will also accept motor oil
which should be disposed of as you collect it. BFI will also provide locks for
large BFI bins for its customers.
Ms. Sargent said the County of San Mateo offers a Household Hazardous
Waste Disposal Program and to call 363-4718 for more information. Car parts
should not be included in general garbage pickups due to possible
contaminates. You may contact BFI to replace damaged recycling bins at no
cost.
Superintendent Hartman asked if BFI recycles catalogs. Ms. Sargent said
currently catalogs can be dropped off at the San Carlos transfer station but BFI
is working on picking up catalogs curbside sometime in the future.
Ms. Sargent said at the last City Council meeting, they approved moving
forward with developing a system for a yard waste program. Commissioner
Walsh asked about the financing of the recycling program and Ms. Sargent
said there is a perception that recycling is a money making enterprise when in
fact BFI loses money on the program. She gave some history for the recycling
program and stated that BFI has experienced a loss of $1.5 million from
1989-1995. BFI is committed to this effort to meet the 25% and 50% reduction
garbage to landfills required by State mandated AB939 by the year 2005.
Mr. Gasparini said BFI believes the yard waste program will replace the end of
the month pickup. By eliminating the end of the month pickup, people will
have to pay for their actual garbage pickup and will not be able to defer their
garbage to the end of the month and as a result reduce their can size. The
bi-annual BFI cleanups will also continue.
ITEM 2-UPDATE ON SEQUOIA HOSPITAL
Chairperson Lloyd distributed packets on Sequoia Hospital from Catholic
Heathcare West. Commissioner Newell reported that the decision on
Sequoia Hospital was postponed for one week. He also distributed an article
from the Redwood City Almanac written by Dr. Sidney Marchasin regarding
the sale of Sequoia Hospital. Commissioners who attended the Sequoia
community meetings indicated people at the meetings were strongly in
support of a non-profit organization purchase of the facility. Commissioner
Walsh provided copies of a New York Times article concerning Columbia to
the Sequoia Board of Directors and the Commissioners. He mentioned he
would be attending a Commission on Aging committee meeting very soon
and the future of Sequoia Hospital for "help at home services" is on the
agenda.
