Supervisor Griffith said she met with a representative of BAK Physical
Therapy who is the new contractor for the cardio-pulmonary function
program which has been using the Senior Annex facilities. BAK would like
to increase the program and this facility would become Phase 4 of the
program which would concentrate on fitness for the participants. Supervisor
Griffith said she is unsure how the Sequoia Hopsital sale would impact the
health programs at the Senior Center.
ITEM 3-PROGRESS REPORT ON COMMISSION WORKPLAN
ASSIGNMENTS
It was mentioned that Marie Walsh would like to come speak at the May
meeting regarding the peer counseling program. There is the potential under
a new program that the Veterans Memorial Senior Center may get 1 to 4 peer
counselors. Commissioner Newell said he is continuing to work on his
proposal for fixed income seniors in HUD housing to obtain needed services.
He attended the Human Services Financial Assistance (HSFA) grant
workshop to gain more information about the process. A representative
from Rediwheels will come to speak at the April meeting. The Housing and
Human Concerns Committee will be holding a public hearing on March 26 at
6pm at the Fair Oaks Community Center to hear the HSFA grant applications.
Several of the applicants provide senior services and it was suggested that the
Commissioners try to attend the meeting. There will be a second public
hearing on April 3 from 7:00-9:30pm.
The Commissioners agreed to contact City Councilmembers to meet with
them to discuss senior issues. Commissioner Walsh suggested having the
City Manager speak at a future Commission meeting. Commissioner Capone
submitted a report to the Commission regarding a summary of her research
on consumer watch issues for seniors. She said she felt that the adult day care
programs at Rosener House and Catholic Charities are underutilized by
Redwood City residents. Adult daycare is a program that many residents need
but because they are not aware of the program, do not use the service. She
made several suggestions on ways to educate our residents on this important
program.
ITEM 4-TRANSPORTATION UPDATE
Commissioner Newell said he would research the insurance coverage of
volunteers in the FISH program and report back to the Commission.
Commissioner Walsh is also working on the issue of insurance liability for
volunteers. He met with the City Attorney of San Francisco who suggested
he meet with insurance companies to discuss the issue. It was also suggested
that he meet with the Risk Manager for San Mateo County to determine the
exposure and explore the possibilities. Commissioner Walsh is also working
with the attorney for the Commission on Aging on this matter.
