Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday, July 11, 1996
continue to be held by BFI. Ms. Holmquist agreed to send a summary of her
presentation to each of the Commissioners.
Debbie Sargent of BR spoke about a mixed paper collection program which is
being developed to include clean boxes, magazines, and other paper normally
thrown out in the garbage and also spoke about the additional items BFI is
proposing to include in its recycling program. Manager Linda Griffith said
she lives in San Francisco which has this same mixed paper collection
program and noted that it works very well in reducing the amount of garbage
needing to be picked up. Ms. Sargent said 46% of Redwood City residents put
recyclables out each week. She noted that currently 4-6% of the residential
solid waste collected by BFI is mixed paper and 12-14% is yard waste.
Commissioner Newell felt there needed to be more "hands-on" community
education for the public in order to make the program successful.
ITEM 2-TRANSPORTATION
Vice Chairperson Walsh spoke about contacting several people at the County
regarding liability for seniors who transport seniors. He was advised that the
County is self-insured and provides coverage for people who volunteer in
County programs. He said Patricia Harris of San Mateo County said she
would be willing to work with the City on this matter. He was also referred to
Finance Director Brian Ponty for further information regarding Redwood
City's coverage. Vice Chairperson Walsh said he would like to pursue this
matter further and the Commissioners agreed this was a good idea.
Commissioner Newell said he would be happy to assist on this issue.
ITEM 3-TEWCI UPDATE
Superintendent Centeno said there have been two more meetings regarding
this issue and the TEWCI Board has agreed to do more fundraising to deal
with the cutbacks the Center has been faced with. The Board has also agreed
to let other senior service agencies utilize the empty office space at the Fair
Oaks Senior Center. This will be a regular agenda item.
ITEM 4-WORKPLAN UPDATES
Superintendent Centeno read a letter sent to Chairperson Lloyd from Mayor
Hartnett requesting a summary of the Commission's 95-96 accomplishments
and ideas for their 96-97 workplan. The Commissioners agreed to set aside
their August meeting to discuss this matter in detail.
Manager Griffiths stated the Peer Counseling program will begin at the
Veterans Memorial Senior Center on August 1 and will be handled in
conjunction with the San Mateo County program.
