Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday, October 10, 1996
programs currently offered. The programs include Information and Referral,
Nutrition, Peer Counseling, Fitness Programs, classes, health lectures and
screenings, and special events/trips. She also gave statistical information
about the number of volunteers who help at the Center and the total number
of hours they donate. She also discussed the history of the building and the
history and formation of the Veterans Memorial Senior Advisory Council
(VMSAC). Linda Griffith currently serves as the City's liaison to this group.
The Commissioners were given a budget spreadsheet and Superintendent
Centeno reviewed the budget for fiscal years 94-95, 95-96, 96-97 and 97-98 and
explained what portion of the budget is funded by the City and what portion
is funded by the VMSAC. She also discussed City positions, supply costs, and
internal service costs. She noted the VMSAC helps fund various part time
casual positions and has also purchased modern fitness equipment and
furniture for the Center. Superintendent Centeno stated City support of the
Veterans Memorial Senior Center has remained constant. She noted the
budget spreadsheet does not reflect all funds spent for the Center because
many items are paid directly by the VMSAC.
ITEM 3-TEWCI UPDATE
Executive Director Maria Bransford stated the TEWCI Board continues to
work on raising funds for the Fair Oaks Senior Center. They have made one
proposal to a local foundation for funding which was denied. She mentioned
they will be reporting to the City Council in November on their progress so
far. She noted a 20 hour typist was recently hired for the Center and a very
successful open house for their playground project was just held.
Ms. Bransford said she will be reviewing a list of potential non-profit agencies
with Magda Gonzalez to develop a Request for Proposal (RFP). She said
possible agencies include a home sharing program, peer counseling (Hispanic
component), and Project Reach (caregiver support services through Stanford).
Ms. Bransford gave a brief overview of the Fair Oaks Senior Center for the
Commissioners. She noted it has been run by TEWCI since 1972 with an
emphasis on services for the elderly. Through an agreement with the City of
Redwood City 8 to 9 years ago, the City pays for the building and its
maintenance as long as TEWCI remains a viable organization. Ms. Bransford
said Fair Oaks Senior Center also offers nutrition, classes, and transportation.
She asked the Commissioners for their assistance in getting the TEWCI
landscaping done since they have been waiting for several years for the
project to be completed.
