Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday, November 14, 1996
the regular garbage. She also noted that beginning January 1, it will no longer
be necessary to separate glass and cans which will go into one recycling
container.
Currently, BFI picks up recycling containers every week but with the new
programs, recycling containers will be picked up every other week. This pick-
up date will be called "Environmental Day" and customers will be provided
with a schedule of these dates for 1997. There will be no additional charge to
the consumer but the end of the month pick-up will be eliminated with the
addition of these new programs. Ms. Gallagher stated that BFI will also be
expanding the types of plastic containers it will pick up to include all #2
containers such as bleach and shampoo. Beginning November 19, residents
will receive a postcard introducing them to the program and beginning
November 29, will receive a large bulletin explaining the program. All
residents will also receive a reference guide to recycling and a magnetic
calendar printed with all 1997 Environmental Day recycling dates. BFI plans
to do a comprehensive campaign to educate the public on the new programs
and including making presentations to various groups.
Gino Gasparini announced the BFI Spring and Fall Clean-ups will remain in
place during the last weeks of April and October. It was noted that residents'
garbage pick-up date may be different than their yard waste pick-up date.
Home composting is being done by many residents and people may continue
this practice and do not have to use the green waste recycling bin. Ms.
Gallagher noted the green waste will be recycled for land application such as
compost and mulch for farmers and cover material for land fill and the glass
and plastics are sold to brokers for recycling. There will be a phase-in period
for residents beginning in January and BFI will issue notices to those
residents during this transition period.
ITEM 2-VETERANS MEMORIAL SENIOR CENTER REVIEW COMMITTEE
UPDATE
Commissioner Anthony announced that Carl Giari and John Dempsey have
resigned from the committee due to other commitments so two replacement
members are needed.
