Senior Affairs Commission Page 3
Minutes of Thursday, February 13, 1997
M/S Walsh/Newell: To send a letter to SamTrans stating the Commission's
displeasure with the 50% fare increase; they we find the increase
inflationary and beyond the cost of living for the disabled
and senior population in our community.
Motion passed.
ITEM 3 - FY96-97 WORKPLAN REVIEW
-Focused Discussion on Children and Youth Issues
Commissioner Newell stated he spoke to Pam Thornberg who is the outreach
specialist at John Gill School. Ms. Thomberg stated that there are many
problems facing the students at John Gill and the Intergenerational Program
was very successful in helping their students. There are currently 18 to 20
active seniors who work one-on-one with students teaching them
fundamental skills, but more seniors are needed. Manager Griffith
mentioned that Intergenerational flyers are posted before school starts in
September asking for senior classroom volunteers. She also noted that John
Gill School and the Veterans Memorial Senior Center have joint programs
several times during the year.
Commissioner Newell said he would like to explore how seniors can support
the children in the schools and how the children can support homebound
seniors. Commissioners Newell and Anthony and Pam Thomberg will meet
to discuss this matter further and Chairperson Walsh suggested having John
Gill Principal Ricardo Balderas also participate in this meeting.
M/S Newell/Lloyd: To have the Senior Affairs Commission co-sponsor an
Intergenerational Program with the Civic Cultural Commission.
Chairperson Walsh suggested including other schools, local churches and
neighborhood associations to participate in the program.
Motion passed.
-Economic Development Issues
It was suggested having Redevelopment Director Mike Church or the
Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee speak at the
April Commission meeting to discuss economic development.
-Health Care-Report on Meeting with Catholic Healthcare West
Chairperson Walsh reported that Commissioner Anthony met with the new
representative from Catholic Healthcare West recently and noted that
the representative will also be speaking at various senior group meetings.
Chairperson Walsh also felt we should also be talking with the Kaiser
Hospital administrator to discuss where Kaiser sees their involvement in
Redwood City.
