Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday, April 10, 1997
b.) Veterans Memorial Senior Center Operations Review
Commissioner Anthony requested the sub-committee be granted an
extension to the June meeting to make its formal written report. He stated
the group would have an oral preliminary report for the May meeting.
M/S Anthony/Moran: To delay the report of the Veterans Memorial Senior
Center Operations Review Sub-Committee until the June meeting and
an oral preliminary report will be presented at the May meeting.
Motion passed.
c.) Insurance-Give a Ride Show You Care
Manager Griffith reported that Finance Director Brian Ponty has notified staff
that the insurance cost of covering 100 volunteers for a 6 month period
would be approximately $820.00 and includes a $125.00 membership fee.
Manager Griffith and Chairperson Walsh made a presentation to the
Veterans Memorial Senior Center Advisory Board regarding this proposed
program and it was fairly well received. A letter will be written to the
president of each senior organization represented on the Advisory Board to
get the information out to their groups. They would like to follow up by
attending each organization's meeting.
Manager Griffith informed the Commission she contacted the FISH
organization regarding the operation of their volunteer driver program
which provides rides to people for medical appointments and for food
delivery. She was advised by FISH that criteria needs to be developed for each
volunteer driver and that a coordinator is needed to match each driver and
rider. She was also advised that FISH has very few drivers in Redwood City
although there are many riders from Redwood City needing assistance.
The Commissioners discussed pro-rating the senior clubs for the $820.00
insurance cost since their members would benefit from the program; going to
the City Council for the funds needed to pay for the insurance; or looking at
both ideas. Chairperson Walsh said we want to make sure that this a is viable
program and we need to ensure that we have enough volunteers for the
program to work. Manager Griffith will work with Chairperson Walsh to
develop a letter which will go to the Advisory Council members explaining
the program in further detail. The Commissioners discussed many ways to
advertise the program to users as well as potential volunteers.
ITEM 2- FY96-97 WORKPLAN
-Entrepreneurial/Innovation
Chairperson Walsh reported on the positive meeting with Sequoia Hospital
administrators. The Commissioners reviewed the HICAP HMO Information
Chart and Commissioner Newell discussed the fact that in some instances,
