Senior Affairs Commission Page 3
Minutes of Thursday, April 10, 1997
HMO patients in need of skilled care are unable to get this service because the
HMO won't pay for it.
Manager Griffith reported that 40 people attended the HMO Healthcare
Forum held on April 4 at the Vets Senior Center which was moderated by
HICAP. Chairperson Walsh announced that the notice for the Health Forum
appeared in the Mt. Carmel Church Sunday bulletin and advised Manager
Griffith to send any announcements for upcoming senior events to Mt.
Carmel Church. He also provided a list of all the churches in Redwood City
to Manager Griffiths so they could also be included in any mailings of the
Senior Center. The Commissioners discussed other groups that should be
notified of programs such as senior housing facilities and service
organizations like the Interservice Coordinating Council.
-Public Safety
Chairperson Walsh spoke about the presentation by Police Chief Carlos
Bolanos and suggested that the Commission establish a program in the Fall in
conjunction with the Police Department concerning scams, elder abuse and
other similar topics. Chairperson Walsh volunteered to contact Chief
Bolanos regarding the Chief's suggestion of having a Police Department
contact regarding code enforcement issues and establishing training for mail
carriers.
-Economic Development
Chairperson Walsh reported on the meeting that he and Vice Chairperson
Moran had with Mayor Hartnett. They discussed various issues including
economic development and how the Commission could assist in this area.
A suggestion was made to have the Commission host a lunch several times
per year in one of the downtown restaurants which would also feature an
entertaining guest speaker. Possible locations were discussed along with
names of several interesting guest speakers.
M/S Walsh/Lloyd: To set up a sub-committee to organize senior luncheons
in downtown Redwood City.
Motion passed.
Chairperson Walsh and Commissioner Harrison will work on this
sub-committee. Possible dates for the first luncheon include Thursday,
May 29 or June 5.
The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was adjourned at
4:50pm to be reconvened at 3:00pm on Thursday, May 8, 1997 at the Senior
Center Annex, 711 Nevada Street, Redwood City, California.
