SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 1998 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Walsh, Commissioners Anthony, <br /> Harrison, Moran, Newell (arrived at 3:45pm), and Walsh <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioner Lloyd <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: Dr. Jeff Filippi representing RESCUE <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Manager Linda Griffith <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by <br /> Chairperson Leo Walsh 3:00pm at the Fair Oaks Senior Center, 2600 <br /> Middlefield Road, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> The November minutes were approved as mailed. <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> There was no correspondence. <br /> ORAL COMMUNICATIONS <br /> Dr. Jeff Filippi spoke to the Commission regarding RESCUE's attack on music <br /> cutbacks in the Redwood City schools. Currently, the District is positioned <br /> to re-establish music programs in grades 2 and 3, and they would like to <br /> expand to grades 4 through 8 in the area of instrumental program which <br /> feeds the high school and college level courses. There is a need for 250 <br /> musical instruments and RESCUE is seeking donations for this purpose. <br /> Donations can either be in the form of musical instruments or cash. <br /> Dr. Filippi spoke about studies which indicate that music is important and <br /> essential to students' spatial learning. He felt that every student who wants <br /> to take up a musical instrument should be able to participate. Dr. Filippi <br /> asked the Senior Affairs Commission for their support in the form of a letter <br /> of endorsement. He mentioned that no matching funds are currently <br /> available from the State. <br /> M/S M.Walsh/Newell: To support the concept of a community-wide <br /> project to bring instrumental music back to the schools. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br /> ITEM 1 — CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT <br /> Chairperson Walsh announced President Clinton has proposed to broaden <br /> Medi-Care benefits to those under 65 and urged the Commission to monitor <br /> this proposal. <br /> Chairperson Walsh discussed the letter sent to Sequoia Hospital <br /> Administrator Glenna Vaskelis requesting a meeting.
