Senior Affairs Commission Page 4 <br /> Minutes of Thursday,February 12, 1998 <br /> Calming effort, in December, the City Council adopted the installation of <br /> speed humps in order to slow traffic in neighborhoods. These devices are <br /> 14' long and 3" high and require a written request and consensus of 60% of <br /> the neighborhood before they can be installed. <br /> Another traffic calming tool is new criteria for stop sign installation. This will <br /> be taken back to the Council for their approval in late February or March. <br /> Criteria for stop sign installation had been previously defined by CalTrans but <br /> was never applicable to residential areas. <br /> Commissioner Newell asked about pedestrian traffic safety for seniors; what <br /> areas Mr. Haygood had jurisdiction over; and if Mr. Haygood had any <br /> statistics concerning accident rates involving pedestrians. Mr. Haygood <br /> presented a map of Redwood City indicating all types of traffic accidents <br /> (including pedestrian) which occurred in 1996. Commissioner Newell asked <br /> about timing of lights so that seniors using canes or walkers had sufficient <br /> time to cross the street. Manager Griffith suggested installing equipment at <br /> busy signal intersections for the hearing impaired. The Commissioners were <br /> given a pedestrian education program packet developed by Ashland, Oregon <br /> for their review. Mr. Haygood listened to the Commissioners' comments and <br /> thanked them for the opportunity to speak to the group. <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was adjourned at <br /> 5:05pm to be reconvened at 3:00pm on Thursday, March 12, 1998 at the <br /> Senior Center Annex, 711 Nevada Street, Redwood City, California. <br />
