Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday,March 12, 1998
Other suggestions were to have the City assist with financing; home sharing
with other seniors; to do everything to maintain the current HUD Section 8
housing units in Redwood City; and to pursue this matter with legislators, if
necessary.
M/S Moran/Anthony: To send these recommendations to the Housing and
Human Concerns Committee.
Motion passed.
ITEM 2 — CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT
-Follow-up on Sequoia Hospital meeting
Chairperson Walsh reported he spoke to Irene Casanova of TIES and
confirmed that a call to TIES can arrange in-home support services to
discharged patients. As of November 1997, Ms. Casanova had received a
total of 1 1 1 calls for assistance from Redwood City households to the TIES
line. Chairperson Walsh stated he would like to invite other seniors to
participate on the sub-committee with himself and Commissioners Lloyd and
Harrison. He suggested that Ms. Casanova speak at senior clubs regarding
the services TIES can provide to seniors. Commissioner Anthony will check
with AARP Chapters #3137 and #746 to see if a joint meeting can be held
at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center where Ms. Casanova could speak.
This event will probably take place in April or May; anticipated attendance
would be approximately 150 people.
-Follow-up on Catholic Health Care West Senior Advisory Committee Meeting
Chairperson Walsh reported he was invited by Catholic Health Care West to
participate on a Senior Services Task Force which will meet once a month
during March, April and May. A copy of Chairperson Walsh's Task Force
information packet will be mailed to the Commissioners. Chairperson Walsh
asked the Commissioners for their specific personal experiences at Sequoia
Hospital so he could provide credible information to the Task Force.
Consideration of resolution regarding Federal Campaign Finance Reform
Chairperson Walsh spoke about the status of campaign finance reform at the
national level noting he would continue efforts with the Senior Legislature.
ITEM 3 — WORKPLAN UPDATES
-Cancellation of March 18 Luncheon/Future Date Selection/Future Themes
Chairperson Walsh reported the March 18 luncheon has been cancelled
because our speaker cannot attend on this date. Commissioner Harrison said
turnout was low for this lunch; she has contacted all people who had
responded and returned their checks. Chairperson Walsh proposed having a
historic tour of downtown Redwood City as the Commission's next event.
Ken Rolandelli of the Historic Resources Advisory Committee would lead the
tour on May 16 at 10:30am which would begin at the Lathrop House and
would last 1 hour and 15 minutes; a luncheon (optional) would follow. The
Commissioners liked with his proposal and suggested lunch be held at the
Redwood Spice Company. Chairperson Walsh also suggested inviting
Congresswoman Eshoo to join the Commission for lunch in August or
September.
