Senior Affairs Commission Page 2 <br /> Minutes of Thursday, May 14, 1998 <br /> Commissioner Lloyd spoke regarding the HMO's and the information services <br /> offered by the VMSC. Chairperson Walsh spoke about who is responsible: <br /> the HMO's, the doctors, the nurses. Commissioner Lloyd spoke regarding <br /> recent news on TV and in the newspaper on this topic. Chairperson Walsh <br /> asked Manager Griffith about the medical care activities offered at the <br /> VMSC. Manager Griffith noted that individuals can seek assistance from <br /> HICAP counselors, but that people do not generally seek out help unless they <br /> are dealing with a specific problem. <br /> Dr. Willey commented on a CNA presentation in San Mateo regarding HMO's <br /> and changes to levels of care. He suggested a CNA-sponsored group present <br /> a program at the VMSC. <br /> Chairperson Walsh noted that he wanted to select an issue that the <br /> Commission could pursue. He spoke regarding the new "ombudsman" <br /> nurses employed by Kaiser. Manager Griffith noted she would support this <br /> by finding a room and advertising. She was asked to find people who might <br /> like to help with the program. <br /> -Report on California Senior Legislature and Campaign Finance Reform <br /> Chairperson Walsh reported that a resolution in support of finance reform <br /> passed the California Senior Legislature in October. The Chairperson sent <br /> personal letters to all California Representatives and Senators. Eight <br /> responses were received; one from Congresswoman Eshoo and Senator <br /> Lofgren of San Jose. The San Mateo County Commission on Aging asked <br /> for support from Senator Sher and Assemblyman Lempert. Senator Sher <br /> responded he would take no action; no response to date from Assemblyman <br /> Lempert. Huge amounts of dollars are being spent in lobbying. He asked the <br /> Commission if they wished to take any action. <br /> Commissioner Lloyd expressed his concern about politicians keeping <br /> campaign funds and the large amount of dollars spent on campaigns. <br /> M/S Moran/ : That the Commission be in favor of campaign finance <br /> reform at the level of U. S. Senators and Representatives. <br /> Motion died for lack of a second. <br /> Item for next meeting's agenda: Are there any campaign limitations for <br /> either County of City elected officials? Staff will research. <br /> The TIES representative is now in-house at the VMSC on a regular basis and <br /> TIES presentations were made to both AARP clubs. The Commissioners had <br /> questions regarding the number of calls from Redwood City and major issues. <br /> This is an excellent contact for those not involved with hospital social work <br /> staff. <br /> ITEM 3 - WORKPLAN UPDATES <br /> -Economic Development Luncheon <br /> Commissioner Harrison reported 24 attendees for the May 16 luncheon and <br /> the restaurant has been confirmed; everyone will meet at the Lathrop House. <br /> Invitation letters were distributed to churches and neighborhood associations <br /> and Chairperson Walsh also made personal calls to the groups so if it rains, <br /> the program will still continue. <br />
