Senior Affairs Commission Page 3 <br /> Minutes of Thursday,May 14, 1998 <br /> A potential speaker at a future luncheon could be Congresswoman Anna <br /> Eshoo. The Commissioners discussed a concern about the number of people <br /> who would attend; finding a restaurant or site large enough to accommodate <br /> 100 people; possibly using the VMSC on a Thursday at 11 :30am; having the <br /> potential speaker make their presentation in the Little Theater. Richard <br /> Gordon, President of Chamber of Commerce and member of Board of <br /> Supervisors was also suggested as a possible speaker. <br /> -Intergenerational Programs <br /> Commissioner Newell spoke about the long standing tutor relationship with <br /> John Gill School; Woodside Terrace with Taft School; and RESCUE Senior <br /> Volunteers for music. He also spoke about the many programs funded by <br /> the Foundation including the fundraiser value card at $10.00 each. <br /> Commissioner Newell spoke about potential changes in the outreach <br /> specialist position and funding issues, and the difficulties in organizing <br /> teachers and seniors. <br /> Manager Linda Griffiths spoke about the VMSC Intergenerational Programs <br /> with John Gill School at-risk children that have been held recently including <br /> the Easter Egg Hunt, lunches, performances for seniors, and attempts to <br /> place volunteers at various school sites. <br /> Project ideas for the Commission might include a surrogate grandparent <br /> program, working with the two skilled nursing facilities, or onsite tutoring. <br /> Vice Chairperson Moran reported the Peninsula Hills Womens' Club held an <br /> "Over 80 Birthday Party" and West Bay Christian Academy volunteered to <br /> help. <br /> Manager Griffith reported on a wonderful pen pal project with a San Mateo <br /> school which included letter exchanges every two weeks. <br /> ITEM 3 — Report on Council Board and Commission Study Session Process <br /> Superintendent Centeno reviewed the application process with the <br /> Commissioners and informed those Commissioners whose terms were ending <br /> to re-apply and reviewed the deadlines with them. Chairperson Walsh asked <br /> that a copy of the announcement be sent to our luncheon mailing list <br /> including a cover memo from the chairperson. Superintendent Centeno <br /> reported on the deadlines for applications for the Senior Affairs Commission. <br /> The City Council Study Session with the Commission is set for September <br /> 14, 1998. The topic will be agendized for the next Commission meeting. <br /> ANNOUNCEMENTS <br /> -Dr. Willey reported that the City Council recommended $15,000 funding <br /> versus $30,000 for the TEWCI/Fair Oaks Senior Center; the Council took the <br /> recommendation from the Housing and Human Concerns Committee. <br /> -Commissioner Lloyd announced the 8:00am Memorial Day Service at Union <br /> Cemetery; there will be a free breakfast served at the American Legion Hall <br /> following the ceremony, and there will also be an 11 :00am program <br /> sponsored by the Native Daughters. <br />
