Senior Affairs Commission Page 2 <br /> Minutes of Thursday,September 10, 1998 <br /> -Elder Hostel <br /> Chairperson Walsh spoke regarding his elder hostel experience. <br /> -San Mateo County Courts Community Input Meetings <br /> Chairperson Walsh advised the Commissioners of upcoming San Mateo <br /> County Courts Community Focus Group meetings. <br /> ITEM 2 - WORKPLAN UPDATES <br /> -Economic Development Luncheon <br /> Chairperson Walsh and Commissioner Harrison reported on the successful <br /> luncheon program held on September 1 at Caffe Amore. There were 38 <br /> people in attendance presenting a broad cross section of the community. <br /> The Commissioners discussed having another luncheon before Thanksgiving <br /> and asked for ideas on guest speakers for the event. Possible speakers <br /> included Congresswoman Anna Eshoo; Ted Fang, publisher of the <br /> Independent Newspapers; and Jerry Fuchs, columnist for the Independent <br /> Newspapers. Other suggestions included having name badges to identify <br /> Commissioners, name tags for the guests, and having the Commission <br /> members spread themselves out among the guests. Commissioner Walsh <br /> suggested the March luncheon be held at Lathrop House and a tour of the <br /> new Historical Museum to follow. <br /> Commissioner Nobles shared an editorial from the Sacramento Bee regarding <br /> elderly abuse. The subject will be considered under Item 3. <br /> Oath of Office <br /> Janet Borgens was sworn in by Superintendent Centeno. <br /> ITEM 3 - 98-99 WORK PLAN AND UPCOMING JOINT STUDY SESSION <br /> WITH THE CITY COUNCIL <br /> Superintendent Centeno announced the joint study session with the City <br /> Council would be held on Monday, September 14 at 7:30pm in the City <br /> Council Chambers. She reviewed the study session process with the <br /> Commissioners and announced the facilitator for the event would be Cecil <br /> Reeves from the San Mateo County Office of Education. The Commissioners <br /> will be asked to identify upcoming issues, share work plans, get guidance <br /> from the Council and share ideas for improving effectiveness. <br /> The Commissioners reviewed the draft work plan for FY98-99 and made <br /> changes or revisions as follows: <br /> Economic Development <br /> Add a statement to include creased involvement of the Neighborhood <br /> Associations and religious communities. <br /> Health Care <br /> Add issue of local doctors pulling out of Heath Maintenance Organizations <br /> (HMO's) and the potential impact on the senior population. <br /> Add publicity on what constitutes elder abuse and follow-up and support <br /> available. <br />
