Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday,December 10, 1998
program appears to receive adequate funding and is also a model for the rest
of the counties in the State.
Chairperson Walsh asked Ms. Weiss to provide the Commission with
statistics on the number of calls received from Redwood City. Commissioner
Carpe asked that data from other cities be included in the report so the
Commission could make some comparisons.
Ms. Weiss stated she works well with Manager Linda Griffith who agrees
that education is very important. Elder abuse is a difficult subject to discuss
and is not a subject which draws large attendance. She still continues to
hold informational workshops even if the attendance is smaller than
expected. She also has discussions and training for volunteers and staff at
the Veterans Memorial Senior Center. Ms. Weiss is available on site at the
Senior Center once a month for one hour to assist to seniors with issues.
Commissioner Nobles asked what the Commission could do to increase
public knowledge of elder abuse and Ms. Weiss stated that advertising the
800 TIES line in our newsletters and publications is most helpful.
ITEM 2 - SEQUOIA MEDICAL CLINIC/AETNA COVERAGE ISSUE
Chairperson Walsh stated he and several of the Commissioners were at the
City Council meeting on December 7 and that he spoke under Oral
Communications about the health care problems with Aetna and the
Redwood Medical Clinic and its effect on the seniors in Redwood City. He
said the City Council asked questions about the situation and suggested
scheduling a future meeting between the Commission and City Council to
discuss the issue further. Chairperson Walsh asked Anne Weiss to share this
information with the President of the San Mateo County Commission on
Aging. He suggested that a small group of Commissioners meet before the
Council meeting to prepare for the joint meeting.
Superintendent Centeno announced the next meeting of the Council is
January 4 and suggested to the Commissioners that they develop a list of
suggested actions for the Council. The Commissioners discussed various
recommendations they could make to Council.
Chairperson Walsh spoke about a letter he received from the Sequoia Health
Care District and copies were forwarded to the Commissioners in their
packet.
ITEM 3 - WORKPLAN UPDATES
-Economic Development Luncheons
Commissioner Carpe stated she objected to the luncheon at Sneakers due to
the long flight of stairs at the restaurant which made it inaccessible to
disabled seniors. She wanted to make sure that when planning future
luncheons to make sure all facilities are handicap accessible. Chairperson
Walsh said he was also disappointed with the location site and asked the
Commissioners for suggestions for future luncheons. He suggested touring
the new San Mateo County Historical Museum when it opens next year.
Commissioner M.Walsh suggested having the luncheon at Lathrop House
which is just a few blocks away from the museum.
