Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday, April 8, 1999
Concerns Committee and the finalized plan will be sent to the City Council
for adoption.
Ms. Jones-Thomas noted several reasons for the senior housing problem:
the high cost of housing in the area; many long term subsidy housing
projects are getting out of the business and converting to market rate; and
the overall shortage of affordable housing in the area. She stated there are
over 12,000 people on the housing waiting list with the San Mateo County
Housing Authority. The sub-committee recognizes the extreme shortage of
housing and has decided to focus its housing plan on the most severe
housing problem - that of seniors paying more than 35% of their monthly
income for rent. Ms. Jones-Thomas reviewed the draft plan with the
Commissioners and asked for their comments. Commissioner Nobles made
several comments and asked for clarification on parts of the draft.
M/S Nobles/ : To change item 2e on page 10 to "Redwood City seniors".
Motion died due to lack of a second.
M/S M.Walsh/Borgens: To approve the draft emergency housing plan for
seniors with changes.
Motion passed unanimously.
The Commissioners will receive a final draft of the plan. Ms. Jones-Thomas
stated she anticipates the plan will go to City Council for approval on May
10.
ITEM 2 — CATHOLIC HEALTH CARE WEST NEEDS ASSESSMENT
Commissioner L.Walsh received a copy of the "Community Assessment of
Health and Quality of Life in San Mateo County" document from Catholic
Health Care West and spoke about the one page devoted to senior issues.
He reviewed the page with the Commissioners and felt that the document
did not touch on important senior issues. Superintendent Centeno noted the
document is available on the Internet and that the document is a result of a
Federal requirement for a community needs assessment; it provides statistics
and facts but does not speak to other issues.
Commissioner L.Walsh suggested asking the Sequoia Hospital District do
their own community needs assessment.
M/S L.Walsh/Borgens: To request the Sequoia Hospital District to do a
community needs assessment on senior health care needs to include HMO
coverage and prescription drugs.
Motion passed unanimously.
ITEM 3 — PROPOSED MEETING AT WOODSIDE TERRACE
The Commissioners decided to meet at the Fair Oaks Senior Center in May
and at Woodside Terrace in August. It was suggested to not have a July
Commission meeting.
