Senior Affairs Commission Page 3
Minutes of Thursday, May 13, 1999
• Advisory Council Request
Commissioner M.Walsh reported she spoke to the Advisory Council and
reported on the Commission's visit with Congresswoman Eshoo, attending
the Council study session on water rate increases, and to advise them of our
upcoming luncheon in June. She noted that the Advisory Council asked if
the Commissioners could speak to others on the programs offered at the
Veterans Senior Center such as the Friendly Visitor program, financial help,
and services offered by the Community Action Agency.
Manager Griffith spoke about transportation currently offered to the Center
on Tuesdays and its possible expansion to Thursdays. Because the request
for accessible transportation has increased tremendously, staff has been
using the Red Morton Center accessble van. Redi-wheels is also available
but is not fully utilized by seniors. Many seniors are hesitant to use Redi-
wheels and we need to get the word out to people to educate them on this
service. Manager Griffith asked for an article for the Senior Sentinel on the
Redi-Wheels program. The Commissioners suggested that Commissioner
Carpe write an article on this topic because of her knowledge of the program.
Commissioner Nobles stated she has been trying to work with the
Independent Newspaper to get them to write an article on elder abuse.
Because of some recent increases in funding of elder abuse programs, the
Independent and San Francisco Chronicle had articles on this topic, but the
number for the TIES program was omitted from the article. Commissioner
Nobles drafted a letter to the Independent editor on behalf of the Commission
thanking them for their recent article and advising them of the TIES phone
number. The Commissioners reviewed and approved the letter for
Chairperson Moran's signature.
-Economic Development Luncheon
Commissioner Harrison announced the luncheon will be held on Thursday,
June 24 at 1 :00 pm at the Fortune Restaurant. The Commissioners were
provided with additional invitations to pass out to others.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
-Manager Griffith invited everyone to the "Senior Step Out" on Friday, May
14 at 9:00am at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center. This nationally
recognized event by senior centers is used to help promote senior centers in
their communities. Former Mayor Georgi LaBerge will begin the event with a
stretching program followed by a walk in the neighborhood; a continental
breakfast will follow.
-Manager Griffith will give an update at the June or August meeting on
events at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center.
The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was adjourned at
2:20pm to be reconvened at 1 :00pm on Thursday, June 10, 1999 at the
Veterans Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Avenue, Redwood City,
California.
